Job description
Do you want to be part of a team that powers the Amazon's checkout from payments — even before a customer clicks "Buy Now". Do you want to lead engineers who build the core payments infrastructure that processes billions of transactions with five-nine availability in a fast paced solution, creating a frictionless environment for customers to make purchase? Do you want to be at the frontier of AI-driven commerce, shaping how Amazon's conversational AI, Rufus, seamlessly integrates payments into the future of shopping? If you answered yes to any of the above, this role was built for you — and your work will be seen at the highest levels of Amazon's leadership.

We are looking for a seasoned Senior Software Development Manager (SDM-III) to lead the Payments Checkout team within Amazon Payments. You will own the core payments capability that sits at the intersection of customer trust, engineering excellence, and business impact. Your team is responsible for the end-to-end checkout payments experience — a mission-critical system that must be fast, resilient, and flawlessly reliable at massive scale.

What makes this role truly unique is the frontier it sits on. Your team is pioneering the integration of payments into Amazon's Agentic AI platform, working directly with Rufus to enable intelligent, conversational commerce. You will help define what it means for an AI agent to securely and seamlessly complete a purchase on behalf of a customer — a capability that will redefine how hundreds of millions of customers shop.

You are a technical leader who earns the trust of your engineers, challenges them to raise the bar, and creates an environment where bold ideas thrive. You bring deep expertise in distributed systems, payments, or platform engineering, and you know how to balance long-term architectural vision with the urgency of delivering results. You have a proven track record of building and growing high-performing engineering teams, and you lead with both empathy and accountability.

In this role, you will partner with product, science, and business teams across Amazon to drive the roadmap for core payments and Agentic AI integration. You will set the technical direction, own operational excellence, and ensure your systems are always ready for Amazon's next peak. If you are ready to lead at the intersection of payments infrastructure and the future of AI-powered commerce, we want to hear from you.
We seek an experienced Software Development Manager with a background in developing, delivering, and supporting software services that provide simple solutions for a broad set of problems. You have a strong technical ability, great communication skills, and know-how to inspire your team to achieve bar raising results in a fast-paced environment. You have a track record of building and leading strong teams of talented engineers, and you enjoy working with smart people. You will own your services and be able to make product decisions that balance competing priorities.

Key job responsibilities
- Work closely with software engineers and managers to architect and develop the best technical designs, architectures and implementations.
- Develop monthly, quarterly and yearly strategy and roadmaps for the team based on project priorities and project benefit.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences.
- Work with Product and Program Managers to develop and evolve the vision and strategy for the team.
- Use Agile principles to run the development lifecycle for team’s applications and services.
