Academic Hematopathologist

Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program and McMaster University

Hamilton, Ontario

Applications are invited for a full-time academic hematopathologist in the Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program (HRLMP), with an academic appointment in the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine at McMaster University.

The successful candidate will join a team of three full-time hematopathologists providing a comprehensive diagnostic hematopathology service in one of the largest bone marrow transplantation and lymphoma centres in Canada. Provision of shared on-call responsibilities is a requirement of this position.

The candidate must have Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) certification in hematological pathology OR certification in anatomical or general pathology with RCPSC fellowship training in hematopathology OR American Board of Medical Specialties fellowship training in hematopathology. The candidate also must currently hold or be eligible for medical licensure in the Province of Ontario.

The successful candidate will hold an academic appointment with the rank commensurate to experience. They will be expected to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. A commitment to academic scholarship in the areas of education, quality improvement, knowledge translation, innovation, and/or clinical/translational research is essential.

The Ideal Candidate:

• Is a motivated and collegial physician, with a strong sense of professionalism and excellent communication skills.

• Has training or previous experience in lymphoma and bone marrow diagnostics, body fluid and blood smear interpretation, flow cytometry and molecular hematopathology.

• Has training or experience in pediatric bone marrow interpretation.

• Has previously demonstrated research experience in an area relevant to hematopathology.

• Has experience in quality oversight in laboratory hematology.

While training or experience in any of laboratory hemostasis, transfusion medicine and hemoglobinopathy diagnosis are not required for this position, this is considered an asset, particularly in terms of future planning of our Division.

About the Division of Hematopathology, HRLMP:

The HRLMP Division of Hematopathology was formed as a distinct Division in June 2024, previously part of Anatomical Pathology and Hematology. We serve a diverse patient population and have a busy clinical service with many interesting and challenging cases. Our patient population includes both adult hematology patients and pediatric hematology-oncology patients from McMaster Children’s Hospital, as well as a large external client and consultative service. We have outstanding and highly skilled laboratory technical staff, with particular expertise in morphology and flow cytometry. As a relatively new Division, we are actively working to build an efficient and forward-thinking service on a foundation of innovation, including digital hematopathology and data-driven laboratory test stewardship.

About the HRLMP, McMaster University, and Hamilton:

The HRLMP encompasses five tertiary care hospitals operated by Hamilton Health Sciences and St. Joseph’s Healthcare and employs more than 30 anatomical pathologists in all subspecialties. McMaster University plays an integral role in the educational and economic life of Hamilton, providing a stimulating academic environment with unique opportunities for clinical and basic research.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, in accordance with Canadian Immigration requirements, Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada will be given priority. To comply with the Government of Canada’s reporting requirements, the University is obliged to gather information about applicants’ status as either Permanent Residents of Canada or Canadian citizens. Applicants need not identify their country of origin or current citizenship; however, all applications must include one of the following statements:

Yes, I am a citizen or permanent resident of Canada

No, I am not a citizen or permanent resident of Canada

How to Apply:

Interested candidates are to submit a:

  • Curriculum vitae

  • Names and contact information for at least three referees. Please note letters of reference will not be requested or reviewed at the application stage; letters of recommendation from referees will be requested at later stages of the search process.

  • Letter of interest, including career plans, qualifications / expertise and accomplishments, specifically as to how these relate to this position. This should include an equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) statement reflecting on their past and present activities in EDI, and how they plan to contribute to our EDI mission when they join HRLMP/McMaster.

All documents are to be submitted to the McMaster University careers site. Applications will be accepted until this position is filled.
