WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL CANADA SEEKS SCHOOLS PROGRAM COORDINATOR FOR IWBF WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
(Ottawa, Ont.) Wheelchair Basketball Canada (WBC) is seeking a dynamic, passionate and detail-oriented professional, with strong communication and interpersonal skills, to join our Ottawa team as Schools Program Coordinator. The role is suited for an energetic team player with core competencies in delivery of results, relationship building, communication and initiative. A background in community and corporate event activations, parasport and a passion for sports are a must.
Reporting to the Executive Director of the IWBF Wheelchair Basketball World Championships and collaborating with the event delivery team the Schools Program Coordinator is responsible for the planning and execution of a comprehensive school’s program and supporting a variety of corporate and community events / activations.
The Schools Program Coordinator position requires the ability to organize, plan and deliver industry leading initiatives and events. Working closely with other staff and WBC members, the position functions as a key member of a team while possessing the ability to work independently to advance projects.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement the Schools Program in the Ottawa / Eastern Ontario Area;
- Work with existing community partners in delivering of the Schools Program;
- Contribute to the expansion of the educational wheelchair basketball resource guide and oversee its distribution to participating schools;
- Coordinate school visits, deliver sport demonstrations and manage athlete bookings;
- Inform teachers and students about community-based wheelchair basketball programming and participation opportunities in their area;
- Coordinate the delivery of the wheelchair rental program;
- Manage the equipment inventory, including storage and the transportation of equipment to and from schools during school visits or through the wheelchair rental program;
- Develop and maintain a database of school contacts;
- Develop resources, promotional material and content for website;
- Oversee ticketing strategy and coordinate ticket packages for schools to attend the IWBF Wheelchair Basketball World Championships;
- Coordinate school arrivals and departures during the IWBF Wheelchair Basketball World Championships;
- Liaise with school boards, educators and administrators to develop and implement school-based “try it” days;
- Administer surveys, collect anecdotal feedback and testimonials, and track reporting data from participating schools; and
- Conduct annual assessment of the program and create strategy for long-term sustainability of the program;
- Deliver corporate and community-based wheelchair basketball activations as required and in coordination with the Marketing and Fundraising team.

About Ottawa : Wheelchair Basketball World Championships
Wheelchair Basketball Canada (WBC) has been awarded the rights to host the Wheelchair Basketball World Championships (Ottawa) Sept 9-19, in Ottawa, Canada. Over athletes, coaches, officials, delegates, and volunteers will attend the event that features 28 teams (12 women’s 16 men’s) and 20 participating countries.
As part of its long-term legacy and in preparation for the Games, Wheelchair Basketball Canada will be offering an educational and participative School Program. The program offers a demonstration team that visits schools in the region, educating students and teachers about inclusivity and diversity, while also teaching about Wheelchair Basketball. Participating students and teachers will have a chance to try the sport and play a game.
The aim of the Schools Program will raise awareness, highlight inclusivity, and promote positive attitudinal change toward disability. Armed with sport wheelchairs, the demo team will visit schools in the Greater Ottawa Region, Renfrew County and Lanark County, giving students a chance to try wheelchair basketball and connect with local athletes / role models in an interactive, inclusive, and informative way.
Participating schools will be invited to attend Ottawa.
