Position purpose:

The Senior Manager, Business Development serves as the Faculty of Engineering's senior commercial strategist and primary external-facing leader, with full accountability for developing and executing a partnerships and commercialization agenda that generates measurable impact. Works collaboratively with the Dean, Vice-Dean Partnerships and Associate Director, Business Strategy, Planning and Communications to ensure that partnership and commercialization initiatives align with the faculty’s strategic priorities, institutional objectives, and reputation.

The Senior Manager, Business Development is responsible for identifying, developing, negotiating, and executing strategic external partnerships with industry, government, and institutional partners to advance the faculty’s priorities through commercialization opportunities, revenue-generating initiatives, and flagship projects such as the uOttawa–IBM Cyber Range. This is a revenue-generating, relationship-defining role that requires the judgment of a seasoned business leader and the ability to operate at the intersection of academia, industry, and government.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Act as a trusted advisor to the Dean and Vice-Dean, Partnerships & Entrepreneurship as well as the faculty’s leadership on partnership, commercialization and partnership opportunities, ensuring alignment with the faculty’s strategic priorities established through the faculty’s planning processes.
  • Develop and execute the faculty’s external partnership, commercialization and business development strategy in support of the faculty’s strategic priorities.
  • Translate Faculty strategic priorities into externally funded initiatives by identifying partnership opportunities, negotiating agreements, securing sponsorships and advancing commercialization activities in collaboration with Faculty leadership.
  • Own and drive the faculty’s technology commercialization strategy, setting priorities, allocating resources, and holding accountability for outcomes across the full portfolio of commercialization projects and industry-facing initiatives.
  • Lead the development and execution of business models for Faculty commercial assets, including the uOttawa–IBM Cyber Range, with direct responsibility for revenue targets and partnership terms.
  • Develop and implement commercialization strategies for individual commercialization projects and Centers such as the uOttawa-IBM Cyber Range, to achieve the faculty’s objectives.
  • Exercise independent judgment in evaluating, structuring, and recommending commercialization and partnership opportunities to Faculty leadership.
  • Build and steward a high-value portfolio of strategic relationships across municipal, provincial, federal, and international sectors, with a focus on long-term, mutually beneficial outcomes.
  • Lead the design and oversight of a performance measurement framework for commercialization activities, reporting outcomes to Faculty leadership and external stakeholders.
  • Maintain strategic relationships with internal and external stakeholders through proactive outreach, needs assessments, and engagement activities that advance the faculty’s priorities in research, education, innovation, and talent development.
  • Monitor emerging trends, policy developments, and funding opportunities to inform partnership strategies and support the faculty’s long-term objectives.
  • Represent the Faculty at industry, government, and community forums, promoting its strengths and fostering relationships that contribute to institutional growth and impact.

What you will bring:

  • Master’s degree in business administration or related field.
  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in business development within industry.
  • Experience in business contract negotiation, commercial activities or contract drafting with strong attention to detail, risk assessment and negotiation skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of partnership development, stakeholder engagement, and relationship management principles.
  • Knowledge of government priorities, funding programs, and policy frameworks related to research, innovation, economic development, and workforce development.
  • Strong understanding of the post-secondary education sector, including research, academic programming, innovation ecosystems, and talent development. Understanding of technology commercialization, knowledge mobilization, entrepreneurship, and industry-academic collaboration models.
  • Knowledge of strategic planning, business development, and organizational growth strategies.
  • Experience advising senior leaders and supporting strategic decision-making.
  • Demonstrated experience leading business development, stakeholder engagement, or external relations initiatives in a complex organization.
  • Demonstrated tact, diplomacy, judgment and leadership.
  • Bilingualism (spoken and written).

Prior to May 1, 2022, the University required all students, faculty, staff, and visitors (including contractors) to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 as defined in Policy 129 – Covid-19 Vaccination. This policy was suspended effective May 1, 2022 but may be reinstated at any point in the future depending on public health guidelines and the recommendations of experts.
