Job description

DUTIES

  1. Demonstrate understanding of theories of child development from conception to birth.
  2. Identify the impacts of environmental and genetic factors on fetal development, as well as the short and long-term consequences.
  3. Identify and apply milestones of typical child development from birth to late childhood.
  4. Critique Euro-Western understandings of child development through the lenses of intersectional and Indigenous ways of knowing.
  5. Apply diverse theories and perspectives of child development to child and youth care praxis in educational and child care settings.
  6. Apply knowledge in both Indigenous and non-Indigenous environments to support culturally sensitive and developmentally appropriate practice
  7. Apply contemporary scholarship in child development to the students lived experience.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • A master’s degree in child and youth care is preferred. A candidate who has accumulated experience judged by the Appointments Committee to be particularly relevant to this position and valuable to the School of Social Work and Human Service may be appointed with a relevant master’s degree and an undergraduate credential in child and youth care. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree in child and youth care with 10 plus years of practice experience assessed by the Appointments Committee as relevant to the course may also be considered.
  • Successful teaching experience in post-secondary institutions preferred.
  • A minimum of five years’ professional experience working within a child and youth care capacity is required.
  • An ability to demonstrate experience integrating Indigenous knowledge and teaching methods (TRC CA 62) is required.
  • Proven skills in building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect (TRC CA 62) are required.
  • Teaching excellence, including developing culturally appropriate curricula (TRC CA 10) is required.
  • Candidates must provide evidence of their ability to commit to creating time and space for relationships based on respect as human beings, supporting and embracing differences with kindness, love, and respect (NIMMIWG, 15.7).
