We are hiring Machine Operators in Scarborough, Ontario!

Job Description

The General Production Worker (Twist Operator) operates high-speed stick equipment to package individually cut and wrapped candy in a continuous production environment. This role focuses on maintaining equipment within specified tolerances, performing running adjustments to ensure optimal efficiency and output, and verifying that all packaged product meets strict quality and identification standards. The position also supports automatic packaging of displays and cases while adhering to Good Manufacturing Practices and established operating procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Operate high-speed Halls GD 2001s, TF1s, and Oval Stick equipment to produce candy within specified tolerances while maintaining optimal efficiency and product quality.
  • Run two GD 2001 machines and a TF1 or three Oval Stick machines as required to meet production targets.
  • Assist with equipment startup, shutdown, and changeovers to ensure they are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with procedures.
  • Ensure the safe operation of all assigned equipment and work areas while achieving standard output requirements.
  • Manage product identification, including accurate use and verification of lot numbers and work order numbers.
  • Continuously check identification of bulk materials and finishing supplies to prevent mix-ups and ensure correct product flow.
  • Change inner wrap and outer wrap rolls, as well as code date ribbons, to support uninterrupted production.
  • Update and change code dates on machines to ensure accurate product labeling and traceability.
  • Complete online inspections and document product quality at specified intervals, following quality control requirements.
  • Perform visual checks of product on the in-feed candy conveyor to identify and address defects or inconsistencies.
  • Clear product jams and make minor mechanical adjustments to maintain efficient and continuous operation.
  • Clean machines, transfer stations, and related utensils to maintain hygiene and operational readiness.
  • Maintain order and cleanliness in the work area in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practices and site standards.
  • Operate equipment in alignment with Standard Operating Procedures, Good Manufacturing Practices, Formula and Process Instructions, and IL6S concepts.
  • Provide relief for co-workers during breaks, including acting as a Relief Operator or Case Packer when needed.
  • Actively participate in natural work group activities through clear communication and collaboration to support overall group performance.
  • Cross-train on other packaging and processing equipment to increase flexibility and support production needs.
  • Engage in IL6S activities, including Daily Management Systems, pillar membership, work process ownership, and autonomous maintenance activities.
  • Complete batch paperwork accurately and reference variance points as required for production and quality documentation.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by leadership to support production, quality, and safety goals.

Essential Skills

  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds and safely use a pump truck to move materials and supplies.
  • Mechanical aptitude to troubleshoot issues and perform running adjustments to equipment and product to maintain optimal quality and output.
  • Ability to complete batch paperwork accurately and reference variance points as required.
  • Experience with machine operation in a production, packaging, or general manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to follow Good Manufacturing Practices and standard operating procedures in a food manufacturing setting.
  • Strong attention to detail for checking code dates, packaging material quality, and product quality.
  • Capability to work in a fast-paced, continuous production environment.
  • Willingness to work weekly rotating shifts, including days and afternoons.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a GMP-regulated or food manufacturing environment.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, high-volume production environment.
  • Familiarity with inspection processes and cleanroom or controlled environment practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively within a team-based production environment.
  • Openness to cross-training on multiple types of packaging and processing equipment.

Work Environment

This role is based in a food manufacturing facility that produces candy products in a clean, GMP-compliant environment. The production area is loud and features a noticeable menthol smell due to the nature of the product. Team members must follow all Good Manufacturing Practices and site procedures, including cleanliness, hygiene, and safety protocols. The position follows a weekly rotating shift schedule, with day shifts from 6:00 . to 2:25 . and afternoon shifts from 2:25 . to 10:50 . Work is hands-on and physically active, involving standing for extended periods, lifting up to 35 pounds, operating machinery, and using a pump truck in a fast-paced, continuous production setting.

The pay range for this position is $19.50 - $19.50/hr.
