Overview :
Our client is a dynamic and changing non-profit operating at the cutting edge of technology. The Controller serves a critical operational role within the Finance department, assisting the Director of Finance in carrying out financial procedures and reporting duties. This position oversees core accounting tasks, develops initial financial reports and evaluations, ensures transactional precision, and manages a small team. It demands a proactive leader with technical skills and a strong sense of accountability.
What you will be doing :
- Guide and mentor a small team to ensure reconciliations, journal entries, and monthly closing tasks are completed accurately and on schedule.
- Promote a cooperative team culture that advances the organization’s objectives.
- Generate monthly, quarterly, and ad-hoc financial reports for internal review.
- Conduct preliminary variance assessments, account checks, and comparisons of budget vs actuals.
- Maintain organized documentation and files that are audit-ready.
- Lead and assist in developing the annual budget alongside department managers and project teams.
- Contribute to the financial planning aspect of the organization’s annual strategic plan.
- Manage accounts payable and receivable, payroll-related entries, and allocation of project-related costs.
- Evaluate payments to project partners to ensure compliance with milestones and approved funding plans.
- Draft and refine standard operating procedures in line with best practices for effective finance operations.
- Support updates and improvements to financial workflows and internal control frameworks.
- Participate in preparing compliance and funder reports (such as for ISED, CRA, or other funding bodies).
- Ensure financial policies align with public sector and nonprofit standards.
- Oversee organizational risk coverage, including insurance policies.
- Safeguard the accuracy and reliability of financial information across ERP and accounting systems.
- Work with the finance team to enhance reporting templates and automation solutions.
- Support integration efforts with CRM systems and other relevant platforms.
Assist with additional team initiatives and interdisciplinary needs as required. This position is flexible, and occasionally the individual may take on tasks beyond their primary responsibilities.
