Job description
Enterprise Technical Architect

Where Greatness Grows

The greatest achievements in history are borne from the greatness within people – where human potential meets vision, and passion fuels evolution. Unlocking this potential is the most important thing we do at Bird.

As a leader in Canadian construction for over 100 years, the impact of our team is etched deeply within the core of our legacy. Beyond Bird, this impact is felt in the fundamental aspects of our everyday lives. From the critical infrastructure we depend on, to the energy and resources that keep us moving - we are powering our communities and shaping Canada’s skylines coast-to-coast. Entrenched in the foundation of a culture built more than a century ago is an enduring quest to reimagine what is possible. Our impact is greater than ever, and we are looking for those who seek to redefine their story.

We are a dynamic team of over 5,000 with a range of professions, backgrounds, and areas of expertise. This breadth of diversity in people and opportunities is one of greatest aspects of building your career with Bird. Every trajectory looks different. At Bird, you hold the pen, and you write your story. As you unlock your potential, you are surrounded by a team that supports you every step of the way.

Be a part of our team, where we pride ourselves on the quality of our work and the way we treat each other and our partners. You will build a career and long-lasting relationships based on respect, collaboration, and a solution-focused mindset. Bird is a place where you will unlock your potential and achieve your goals.

The Enterprise Technical Architect is responsible for defining and governing the target technical architecture for the enterprise across platforms, applications, integration, data, cloud, and security. This role translates business strategy into scalable, secure, and cost-effective technology architecture, guiding delivery teams through standards, patterns, roadmaps, and architecture decisions.

The architect partners closely with business leaders, product owners, engineers, security, infrastructure, and vendors to ensure technology investments align to enterprise goals and reduce complexity, risk, and technical debt.

This position can be based out of any Bird offices in Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Define and evolve enterprise technical architecture aligned to business strategy, operating model, and technology roadmap.
  • Develop reference architectures, standards, patterns, and guardrails for solution delivery teams.
  • Establish current-state and future-state architecture, including transition roadmaps and dependency management.
  • Lead architecture assessments to identify gaps, redundancies, risks, and modernization opportunities.
  • Act as a design authority for major programs and platforms; review and approve technical designs.
  • Facilitate architecture governance forums (e.g., Architecture Review Board) and maintain decision records (ADRs).
  • Ensure solutions meet non-functional requirements: security, availability, performance, resilience, maintainability, observability, scalability.
  • Guide teams in architectural trade-offs, technology selection, and build/buy decisions.
  • Define enterprise integration principles including API strategy, messaging, event-driven patterns, and middleware usage.
  • Perform data architecture and partner with data team on data platform, lineage, quality, and governance requirements.
  • Support audits and risk assessments by producing architecture artifacts and evidence.
  • Communicate the technology roadmap, architectural standards, and patterns to stakeholders at different levels of the organization.
  • Lead identification and analysis of key industry and technology trends and provide technical leadership in vendor selection initiatives (RFPs).
  • Evaluate and recommend solutions and technologies that can best address the organization’s challenges and opportunities while meeting industry, legal and/or regulatory specifications.

What We Are Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or related discipline (or equivalent experience)
  • 3-5+ years of Architecture experience (enterprise, solution, data, or principal engineer)
  • Strong knowledge of architecture frameworks and modeling practices (e.g., TOGAF, ERD, UML)
  • Good understanding of architecture practices for e.g., capability mapping, architecture review board, reference architecture, and enterprise architecture management tools for e.g., LeanIX
  • Proven experience designing and governing enterprise-scale systems across cloud and/or hybrid infrastructure, integration/API architecture, application platforms and modernization and security and compliance controls
  • A strong understanding and experience in designing data management framework, ensuring data accuracy and accessibility, implementing data security, and researching data acquisition
  • Experience with AI/ML platforms such as Azure Machine Learning, Databricks, or similar, including designing scalable, secure, and cost‑optimized architectures for model development and productionization
  • Strategic thinking with pragmatic execution
  • Influencing without authority; stakeholder management at senior levels
  • Ability to translate business outcomes into technical roadmaps
  • Strong facilitation, negotiation, and decision-making
  • Clear written and verbal communication; ability to simplify complexity
  • Coaching and mentoring mindset; promotes standards through enablement
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
