Role Responsibilities

We are looking for a dedicated individual to lead and support our Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) program. As the Health and Safety Program Assistant, you will report to the Forestry Safety Programs Lead and operate within the framework of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS Act), Regulations, and Code. Your mission will be to assist the safety team and offer vital support for the strategic implementation, operation and enhancement of the Forestry Division\'s OHS program. This program plays a key role within the broader Government of Alberta (GoA) OHS program.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in investigating and reporting on safety incidents, ensuring full compliance with legislative requirements.
  • Support safety training programs and maintain records.
  • Support the implementation and smooth operation of the Forestry Division\'s OHS management system.
  • Monitor safety performance and assist in fire season safety coordination.
  • Assist with formal evaluations (COR) to continuously improve and ensure the OHS management system remains current, relevant, and compliant with legislated requirements.

    Minimum Requirement :

  • Two-year diploma in a related field; no experience required; or equivalent as described below.
  • Equivalency : Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of : 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

  • Enrollment in a post-secondary OHS program is preferred
  • Eligibility for registration as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST)
  • Designation as a Health and Safety Authority (HSA) or National Construction Safety Office (NCSO)
  • Exhibit strong written and verbal communication skills by engaging with stakeholders and leading teams
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite such as SharePoint and Microsoft Teams
  • Possess strong problem-solving and decision-making skills as it can significantly impact the health and safety of workers
  • A certified auditor
  • Working knowledge of the Government of Alberta Forestry Division and the Occupational Health and Safety Program
  • Additional Requirements

    The following conditions are not required at time of application, but must be provided prior to start date :

  • A valid, unrestricted Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License, or equivalent
  • A minimum 3-year Driver\'s Abstract, showing a record of seven (7) demerits or less (obtained within 30 days of your commencement date and presented to management prior to commencement)
  • A valid Intermediate First Aid certificate with CPR certification
  • A current Defensive Driving certificate
  • H2S Alive
  • Some positions require passing results of a physical fitness test to endure rigorous training and, at times, arduous working conditions.

    This competition is recruiting for seasonal wage Safety Program Assistant in Edmonton with weekly hours up to 36.25.

    What We Offer

  • Wage employees receive 11.6% in addition to regular wage earnings in lieu of paid holidays and vacation leave :
  • 5.6 percent of regular wage earnings instead of paid holidays.
  • 6 percent of regular wage earnings instead of annual vacation pay.
  • Shift differential and opportunity to work overtime, evening, and weekend shifts.
  • Travel within the area and throughout the province will be required as part of your responsibilities to coordinate with Ministry staff and colleagues, other government departments, clients, and other external stakeholders.

    About Your Work Environment

  • This position may require you to work evenings and weekends to meet fire season operational needs.
  • Seasonal Safety Program Assistant will be trained to FI-110 standards with the opportunity to attend further training such as Wildfire Camp Orientation and GoA OHS fundamentals.
  • Estimated term of employment is from 3 to 8 months during the wildfire season, anticipated between April 2026 to October 31, 2026, dependent on operational needs.
