Job description

At Stantec, we help deliver the critical minerals needed to power our world, from the cars we drive to the infrastructure powering our communities. And we don’t just design the largest, deepest, and most technically challenging mines in the world—we do it sustainably. We’re helping clients reduce energy usage, adopt clean energy sources, and implement digital solutions and automation.

Join our team of mining professionals and you’ll be at the forefront of this evolving industry while building the mine of the future. You’ll also build your own future, with exciting opportunities for development and advancement.

Your Opportunity

The primary role of the Mining Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Engineer for underground mines is to ensure a constant and controlled supply of fresh, clean air for underground workers through ventilation studies, performance analyses, and ventilation design. The successful candidate will be responsible for evaluating and designing ventilation systems for underground mines and spaces. This will consist of developing the system designs for the overall ventilation system and the ventilation infrastructure including main fans, cooling systems, heating systems, auxiliary fans and ventilation controls. The candidate will also be responsible for conducting studies for ventilation optimization. To facilitate these studies, the engineer will collect data onsite and identify opportunities for energy savings and improvements to the mine ventilation system. In addition, the candidate will work closely with the client to obtain approval for all assumptions and calculations used in the analysis. The candidate will report to the Senior Mine HVAC Engineer and will also work as part of a team with other technical staff and disciplines.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Provide knowledge and expertise in the design and construction of ventilation systems for underground mines

  • Develop design manuals, technical reports, calculations, drawings and specifications for ventilation and heating/cooling infrastructure

  • Develop ventilation models and designs for underground mines, and provide recommended modifications to existing mine ventilation systems

  • Review and advise on the compliance of underground mine ventilation systems

  • Work with multidisciplinary teams including mining engineers and discipline engineers to include ventilation requirements and recommendations in mine design, and integrate discipline engineering requirements for the ventilation infrastructure

  • Apply ventilation and mining safety engineering best practices, and design HVAC systems and associated controls in accordance with regulations, safety, and production requirements

  • Provide operational support and support activities during commissioning and construction phases

  • Create scopes of supply and construction scopes of work for ventilation systems

  • Conduct ventilation surveys and field tests, often in hot, physically demanding, dirty, and dusty environments

  • Grow and maintain technical client relationships, and support proposal development

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, with the ability to handle change and work with minimal supervision.

  • Must be willing to challenge your own work as well as the work of those around you in the pursuit of quality and safety.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and build relationships at all levels

  • Ability to create clear and concise engineering deliverables

  • Ability to multitask and work in an environment with changing priorities

  • The candidate must demonstrate an interest in mine ventilation and a desire to learn more about the subject

  • Must have excellent verbal / written communication skills and effective interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to concurrently manage multiple assignments and quickly adapt to new priorities.

  • Willingness to travel to client sites or other Stantec offices (~10% travel).

  • Ability to travel as required for project assignments.

  • Valid driver’s license is required

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in HVAC or equivalent.

  • 5-10 years of experience as a HVAC Engineer, preferably with experience in underground mining projects and/or industrial HVAC.

  • A Professional Engineering license is preferred (or the ability to become licensed).

  • Practical underground mine development and construction experience is a plus.

  • Experience in tunnel and underground cavern ventilation, including familiarity with fire lite safety requirement is a plus.

  • Proficient in the use of VentSIM and preferably CFD software (training can be provided to suitable candidates).

  • Working knowledge of business software using Microsoft Word and Excel.
