Job description

At Imperial, we work every day to responsibly develop Canada’s energy resources – applying technology and innovation to supply affordable, accessible and reliable energy while reducing emissions in support of a net-zero future. Imperial recognizes the important role we can play by advancing climate solutions within our operations and by providing lower life-cycle emission products to our customers. This effort is powered by a unique and diverse workforce fueled by a pride in what we do and what we stand for.

The success of our upstream, downstream and chemical, and corporate divisions is the result of the talent, curiosity and drive of our people. They bring solutions every day to optimize our strategy in energy, chemicals, lubricants and lower-emissions technologies.

Imperial honours diverse backgrounds so we can be a place where people can bring their full selves to work, no matter their identity, race, gender, sexual orientation, age, or ability.

At Imperial, we want you to come for the position and stay for the career. As an integrated company, we are uniquely positioned to offer you a wide range of career prospects and growth opportunities through the course of your career with us. We invite you to bring your ideas and help create sustainable solutions that improve quality of life and meet society’s evolving needs.

What role you will play in our team

Join our team as a Sr. Mining Engineer and shape the future of sustainable mining and water management. We have openings in both our Mid-Range and Long-Range Planning teams.

Step into a high impact role where your expertise drives safe, innovative, and environmentally responsible mine operations.

As a Sr. Mining Engineer, you will be responsible for leading the development, optimization, and delivery of mine plans, collaborating closely with Operations, Geology, and Geotechnical teams to ensure alignment of mine plans with business objectives, regulatory compliance, and long term resource strategies.

If you’re energized by solving complex challenges, influencing major asset decisions, and contributing to a world class oil sands operation, this is the opportunity to make a real impact.

What you will do

Key Responsibilities:

• Be a safety leader – support and adhere by all standards and producers and operate with safety as a value
• Develop mine plans, providing technical guidance and recommendations on sequencing, mining rates and equipment deployment
• Integrate mine plans with production forecasts, equipment availability and operating constraints
• Perform schedule and haulage optimization to balance production, cost, and equipment utilization
• Ensure schedules align with approved mine plan, regulatory requirements and business objectives
• Prepare presentations, schedules and visualizations for management and stakeholders
• Provide leadership, coaching and mentoring to junior staff
• Identify opportunities to improve planning processes

About you

Skills and Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mining, Civil or Geological Engineering
• Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility with APEGA is required
• 8+ years of experience in mine engineering, planning, or operations
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication and coordination skills
• Highly motivated individual with ability to work collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams

Preferred Qualifications/ Experience

• Oil sands mine planning experience
• Experience with Deswik, AutoCAD and any commercial mine planning software package would be an asset

Location: Calgary, AB or Edmonton, AB

As part of Imperial’s long‑term business strategy, certain Calgary‑based roles are expected to transition to Edmonton in or around 2028. Your benefits

An Imperial career is one designed to last. Our commitment to you runs deep: our employees grow personally and professionally, with benefits built on our core categories of health, security, finance, and life. Imperial Oil has been recognized as one of Canada’s and Alberta’s top employers (2024) as recognized by Mediacorp Canada Inc.’s 24th annual competition.

We offer you:

  • Competitive salary
  • Training and mentorship
  • Relocation assistance as required
  • Flexible work hours
  • Gym facility, café and marketplace located on campus
  • Employee resource groups (ERG’s) – opportunity to participate in volunteer groups that support furthering the company’s inclusion objectives

  • We thank all those who apply; however, only those candidates selected for interviews will be contacted.
  • For applicants selected to be interviewed, pre-employment background screening will be required.
  • To be considered for employment, your most recent unofficial transcript(s) must be submitted.
  • In certain situations, Imperial may use your application to consider your suitability for other positions in the company and may also provide the information to its affiliates, including affiliates of ExxonMobil Corporation, in connection with possible opportunities at those affiliates.
