Job description

Job Title: Upholsterer Apprentice – Industrial Sewing & Interior Fabrication

Job Description

This role focuses on industrial sewing and interior fabrication, producing high‑quality interior components with precision and consistency. You will primarily operate a Juki industrial sewing machine to cut, sew, and assemble materials from start to finish, working from provided specifications. The position involves hands‑on production work similar to automotive interior manufacturing, using specialized equipment and hand tools to create seats, carpets, headliners, and door cards.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a Juki industrial sewing machine to cut, sew, and assemble interior components from start to finish based on provided materials and specifications.
  • Fabricate interior products such as seats, carpets, headliners, and door cards with a high level of precision, consistency, and attention to detail.
  • Use industrial equipment including CNC embroidery machines, 15‑thread embroidery machines, carpet binders, and pattern stitchers as part of daily production work.
  • Handle and maintain hand tools such as scissors, rotary cutters, foam saws, and seam rippers safely and efficiently.
  • Work with upholstery materials commonly used in marine and automotive interiors, ensuring clean finishes and durable construction.
  • Follow production plans and quality standards to meet deadlines and deliver professional, reliable results.
  • Collaborate with team members and leadership to review specifications, troubleshoot fabrication challenges, and continuously improve processes.
  • Apply basic computer skills and digital tools, including CAD and design software, to support pattern development and embroidery or design work when needed.
  • Maintain an organized, tidy workspace and care for equipment to ensure safe, efficient operation.
  • Contribute to a positive, collaborative work environment by communicating clearly and supporting team goals.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum 2 years of experience and knowledge working with industrial sewing machines.
  • Hands‑on experience with industrial sewing and upholstery materials.
  • Experience working with marine interiors or automotive interiors.
  • Ability to operate a Juki industrial sewing machine or similar industrial sewing equipment.
  • Ability to use CNC embroidery machines and 15‑thread embroidery machines, or willingness to learn.
  • Proficiency with hand tools such as scissors, rotary cutters, foam saws, and seam rippers.
  • Strong attention to detail, precision, and consistency in fabrication work.
  • Basic computer skills and comfort using modern digital tools.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in marine or automotive interior fabrication is highly suitable.
  • Knowledge of CAD software such as Fusion 360 or Rhino.
  • Experience with Adobe Suite, particularly Illustrator.
  • Ability to work with carpet binders and pattern stitchers.
  • A portfolio of previous upholstery, interior, or fabrication work is considered a strong asset.
  • Interest in creative, hands‑on work and learning advanced industrial sewing and embroidery techniques.

Why Work Here?

You will join a welcoming, friendly team that values creative freedom, autonomy, and ownership of your work. The culture emphasizes collaboration, direct access to leadership, and clear opportunities for growth and long‑term career development. Employees benefit from comprehensive Manulife benefits, a cell phone allowance after probation, and a unique setting at an airport with built‑in perks and proximity to flight schools. The workplace is located in a heritage building with character and history, and offers the ability to work on personal projects after hours, enjoy summer BBQs and team social events, and take advantage of a great coffee machine in the lunchroom.

Work Environment

You will work in a production environment that combines industrial sewing equipment, CNC and embroidery machines, carpet binders, pattern stitchers, and a variety of hand tools. The setting is similar to an automotive interior manufacturing shop, located in a heritage building at an airport, providing a unique atmosphere and proximity to flight schools. The schedule is Monday to Friday, with initial hours of 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM during the training period. Once fully trained and established, there is flexibility to transition to a 4×10 workweek.
