Job description

Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia is currently searching for an Unauthorized Practice Intake Analyst to join our team in Burnaby!

The Unauthorized Practice Intake Analyst is responsible for tasks related to the intake, analysis, and triaging of files regarding unregistered individuals and firms who are allegedly engaged in engineering or geoscience practice (Unauthorized Practice) or who are allegedly representing themselves as engineers or geoscientists or firms with the right to engage in engineering or geoscience practice (Misuse of Title). The UPIA takes responsibility for the intake and analysis of all new complaints, opens files, communicates with complainants to gather initial evidence, and applies the triage policy to estimate the risk level associated with each complaint.

This role is part of a high-impact, high-performing team doing rewarding work to protect the public interest.

The successful candidate would play an important part in improving our enforcement program while working on interesting and engaging files.

Our organization - one of BC's Top Employers – offers a competitive salary, comprehensive and generous benefits, an inclusive culture, and a hybrid work environment.

Full details on our compensation and benefits value offering can be found below. WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING Monitor new unauthorized practice and misuse of title complaints from the public and other sources, utilize strong judgment skills to review complaints to assess whether there is jurisdiction and sufficient evidence to move forward with the file opening process; develop recommendations based on application of enforcement procedures and the Professional Governance Act provisions regarding reserved practice and title.

Where warranted, complete triage assessments and open new files.

At the direction of manager, take conduct of and resolve low and medium risk files using strong written and oral (phone) advocacy. Research issues that arise during the course of an investigation.

Review complaints in detail, analyze fact patterns, gather initial information and evidence as required, and conduct email and telephone communications with complainants and, in some cases, enforcement targets.

Manage the Enforcement email inbox and respond to questions from the public regarding unauthorized practice and misuse of title, or escalate those questions to other members of the department as appropriate.

Identify and promptly bring high-risk and atypical files to the attention of management.

Advise management on observed and predicted trends in intake and triage matters for the purposes of strategic department planning.

Assist in the development and implementation of new department policies, procedures, and resources.

Support proactive enforcement campaigns, including through providing advice for campaign selection, developing processes/strategies for conducting campaigns, conducting online research, using internal databases, cross referencing, and using other data analysis techniques to complete tasks relating to the campaigns.

Collaborate with other Engineers and Geoscientists BC departments and teams to coordinate handling of, and response to, inquiries and concerns. Assist with statistics, trend, and KPI reporting as required.

Act in a fair and unbiased manner at all times. Other duties as assigned by direct leader and, as appropriate, members of the departmental leadership team.

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE The successful applicant will possess the following: A university degree is preferred.

Education in legal or paralegal studies is an asset.

  • 2-5 years experience working in a law firm, legal department, professional regulatory body or equivalent.

Experience handling incoming complaints or correspondence from third-parties in a professional or customer service environment.

Excellent writing skills, including the ability to independently prepare written correspondence that is consistently polished, professional, formal, and free of grammatical errors or colloquialisms.

Excellent attention to detail and ability to independently review, analyze, and keep track of a high volume of materials and matters.

Ability to uphold confidentiality and manage sensitive situations.

Ability to take initiative and self-motivate.

WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU Each member of our team contributes to public safety in BC and helps us deliver on our vision of "modern regulation for a resilient world." We serve the public as an inclusive, progressive, and future-focused regulator.

Our Strategic Plan also places priority on our role to advance climate action, foster equity, diversity and inclusion, and move towards reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. At Engineers and Geoscientists BC, we are committed to demonstrating our values of collaboration, excellence, integrity, and innovation. This role offers a competitive compensation and benefits program including a salary within our hiring range of $61,000 to $68,500.

Placement within the hiring range will be based on candidate experience relative to the requirements of the role.

Additional details on our generous benefit offerings are found below. WHO WE ARE Engineers and Geoscientists BC is proud to be recognized as one of BC's Top Employers.
