The role

We are looking for a Technical Advisor, Application Development / Database and Data Administrator to support our Chief Information Officer Branch (CIOB). The Technical Advisor, Application Development / Database and Data Administrator would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

Under the direction of the Manager, Web Applications Development, the Technical Advisor is responsible for the design, development, testing, implementation and maintenance of ChemIn-InChim, a custom-built Symfony-based Web application that is used as the NRC-wide online Chemical Inventory tool.

The Technical Advisor writes new and modifies existing application code while following industry standards and best practices, performs database administration tasks, participates in project activities and discussions, advises on approaches for new functionalities, creates technical specifications and produces technical documentation.

The Technical Advisor works closely with the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Branch as well as technical specialists, colleagues, senior advisors and staff from the NRC Research Centres, Branches and IRAP to clarify requirements for services and to resolve technical issues.

Screening criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education

University degree or 3-year college diploma in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, System Engineering, or other related field.

An equivalent combination of relevant training and experience may also be considered.

Experience

  • Recent* and significant** experience working in a high-pace collaborative development environment based on the LAMP stack technologies;
  • Recent* and significant** experience developing and maintaining large dynamic Web applications using Symfony framework and Doctrine. Experience with other comparable PHP frameworks may also be considered;
  • Recent* and significant** experience developing with Object Oriented PHP;
  • Significant** experience designing and maintaining MariaDB or MySQL databases;
  • Significant** experience developing with technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, , ;
  • Significant** experience using GitLab for code versioning and issue tracking;
  • Experience using command line tools in the UNIX/Linux and Windows environments.

** Significant is defined as at least 2 to 6 years of experience.

* Recent is defined as within the last five years.

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Technical competencies

  • Advanced knowledge of the Symfony framework including dependency management with Composer and WebPack, Flex structure, custom guards, complex Doctrine elements, components, libraries and bundles;
  • Advanced knowledge of the Object Oriented PHP programming language;
  • Solid Knowledge of MariaDB or MySQL relational databases and the SQL/DQL query language;
  • Solid knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, and ;
  • Solid knowledge of Git (GitLab) for version control and issue tracking;
  • Knowledge of the UNIX/Linux Operating System and command line tools;
  • Ability to create new and modify existing application code based on business requirements;
  • Ability to code to industry standards and write technical documentation in English in a fluent and consistent manner.

Assets
1. Understanding SAML authentication and MS Graph API.
2. Familiarity with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).

Compensation

From $103,911 to $130,061 per annum.
