Job description

Royal Roads University (RRU) invites applications for an Assistant Professor (continuing track) in the areas of chemistry, biochemistry, or ecotoxicology within the School of Climate and Environment. The School is committed to interdisciplinary teaching and research that addresses complex environmental challenges through integrated scientific, social, and applied approaches.

The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and graduate programming through disciplinary teaching in chemistry, biochemistry, and/or ecotoxicology, supporting a growing number of courses within the School’s four-year undergraduate program. They will also contribute to graduate supervision, particularly for students pursuing science-based research projects aligned with environmental and climate-related themes.

As part of a collaborative and interdisciplinary academic community, the successful candidate will engage with colleagues across diverse fields, contributing to a research culture that values integration across disciplines. This role offers an opportunity to help build capacity in science-based programming and to contribute to the longer-term development of potential doctoral-level education within the School.

This position is designed to support the development of an emerging scholar’s teaching and research trajectory within a collegial and supportive environment. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to establish their program of research, contribute to curriculum development, and engage meaningfully in the academic life of the School and Faculty.

Job Requirements

We seek an emerging scholar with expertise in chemistry, biochemistry, ecotoxicology, or a closely related field. The successful candidate will hold (or be near completion of) a doctoral degree in one of these disciplines.

This position is intended for an early-career academic (typically within five years of PhD completion), with clear potential for growth in teaching, research, and graduate supervision. The role is primarily focused on establishing a strong foundation in teaching and scholarship, with administrative responsibilities expected to be minimal in the initial years.

Applicants should demonstrate strong disciplinary knowledge and the ability to teach foundational and advanced courses in their area of expertise within an interdisciplinary environmental program. Experience or potential in teaching across modalities, including in-person and/or online environments, is required.

An active and developing program of research and scholarship is expected, with a focus on science-based inquiry relevant to environmental or climate-related challenges.

The successful candidate will demonstrate the potential to supervise graduate students, particularly in research-intensive projects.

The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic and collaborative scholar who is able to work effectively across disciplinary boundaries and contribute to a collegial and interdisciplinary research culture. Evidence of, or commitment to, collaboration across fields will be considered an asset.

Candidates are expected to contribute to service at the School, Faculty, and institutional levels in ways appropriate to their career stage.

Applicants packages should consist of a cover letter, CV and research and teaching statements.

Additional Information
The University is pleased to offer a comprehensive benefit package. The salary range is $86,105 to $128,770. The starting salary is based on qualifications and experience. Royal Roads University is strongly committed to fostering diversity within our community. We welcome those who would contribute to the further diversification of our faculty and staff including, but not limited to, women, visible minorities, Indigenous people, persons with disabilities and persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity.
