Secwepemc Language Teacher
1.0 FTE Term Certain Position
The District is seeking a credentialed Indigenous Language Teacher to support K -12 learners throughout the District effective immediately to June 30 2026 . Candidates will have an extensive understanding of Indigenous pedagogy culture and history the First Peoples Principles of Learning and Indigenous Worldviews and Perspectives. Th e position includes teaching the Secwepemc Language to students of all ages and support other staff in the knowledge and teaching of the Secwepemc language and culture.
Assignment includes 3 locations :
Marion Schilling Elementary : At this location the position includes teaching the Secwepemc language to Grades K-5 on your own and supporting teachers of Grades 6-7. The schedule for this location is based on the schedule for the other locations. You will be required to keep track of the schedule for this location and communicate clearly with the Principal and staff you work with.
Valleyview Secondary School : At this location you will work the course of the first semester teaching 2 blocks of the Secwepemc Language to Grades 8-12. Due to the rotating 4-day 4 block schedule this may require you to travel between here and the Elementary school multiple times in one day. It may also mean spending the morning at one location and the afternoon at the other.
South Kamloops Secondary School : At this location you will work the course of the second semester teaching 2 blocks of the Secwepemc Language to Grades 8-12. Due to the rotating 4-day 4 block schedule this may require you to travel between here and the Elementary school multiple times in one day. It may also mean spending the morning at one location and the afternoon at the other.
Qualifications :
A minimum of 2 years teaching experience in the British Columbia public school system is preferred;
BC Teaching Certificate;
Knowledge of and experience in educational research and methodology for instructing Indigenous students particularly in Grades 8 - 12;
Ability to model proven Indigenous teaching methodologies to teachers and support staff;
Ability to increase cultural knowledge and its Authentic application to the newly revised BC Curriculum;
Ability to provide cross-curricular guided inquiry experiences outdoors;
The ability to communicate and work effectively with students staff parents community partners and administration in implementing and meeting the goals of the Indigenous Enhancement Agreement particularly in the areas of school completion and graduation;
Ability to work collaboratively as a member of the district team;
Valid drivers license .
