Summary

St. Margarets School (SMS) is Western Canadas only girl-centered, independent day and boarding school located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada on the unceded traditional territories of the Esquimalt Nations, Songhees Nations, and WSNE Nations. Founded in 1908, SMS is an international centre for girl-centered learning and leadership development, providing empowering education for girls from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 (boarding grades 712). St. Margarets School is an International Baccalaureate (IB) School offering the Diploma Program.

The Individuals & Societies (Humanities) and Language & Literature (English) Teacher is responsible for delivering dynamic, inquiry-based instruction within the BC Curriculum. Experience in teaching the International Baccalaureate (IB) framework is an asset. Teaching responsibilities include Social Studies, English First Peoples (Writing and Literary Studies), and Social Studies. The role emphasizes interdisciplinary learning, culturally responsive pedagogy, and the integration of Indigenous perspectivesparticularly through the exploration of storytelling, identity, and place. Essential to this role is a commitment to engaging student learning with the overall mission and vision of the school; this includes the proven use of innovative instructional strategies through designing and implementing interdisciplinary units of study anchored in an inquiry approach. Key to this role is a motivation to work in an environment that develops competent, confident, and courageous students within an inclusive, girl-centered learning environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create, implement, and deliver the BC Curriculum, including English Language Arts, Social Studies, and English First Peoples Writing and English First Peoples Literary Studies.
  • A commitment to and experience with embedding Indigenous education principles into teaching practices, particularly through EFT courses, by fostering explorations of personal and cultural identity, community and relationship to land / place.
  • Design student-centered, inquiry based units that prioritize the curricular competencies of the BC Curriculum and authentically assess students through big ideas and key content, especially in relation to First Peoples themes and storytelling practices.
  • Design and deliver EFP Writing 10 and Literary Studies 10, integrating writing for advocacy and personal expression with thematic studies of First Peoples literature, emphasizing storytelling, cultural identity, and diverse genres and forms.
  • Support interdisciplinary learning by linking EFP content to areas such as Social Studies (e.g., literature that challenges non-Indigenous narratives), Music (e.g., lyric writing), Visual Arts (e.g., advertising and graphic storytelling), and Languages (e.g., language revitalization projects).
  • Collaborate regularly with colleagues, including weekly interdisciplinary planning, particularly within the SPARK 10 Program, to design team-taught, inquiry-focused units across subject areas.
  • Incorporate differentiation and adaptation strategies to support a diverse range of student learning profiles, with particular attention to equity, inclusion, and trauma-informed practices.
  • Maintain regular and open communication of student learning, including progress reports, digital portfolios, and informal updates with parents.
  • Provide homeroom support by developing and leading a program that fosters a strong sense of community, belonging, and student agency, while addressing the social and emotional needs of students through intentional routines, relationship-building, and responsive, age-appropriate guidance.
  • Attend meetings with parents and colleagues to support the holistic development of students.
  • Participate actively in regular staff meetings and school-wide events.
  • Demonstrate awareness of and responsiveness to the social and emotional development of girls in a learning environment that encourages voice, agency, and belonging.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Required Education & Experience

  • Current and Valid teacher certification through the BC Teacher Regulation Branch.
  • Bachelor of Education degree with a focus on / experience in teaching Humanities, including Humanities and Social Studies.
  • Certification and minimum of three years experience teaching in an IB Middle Years Programme setting, with familiarity in IB inquiry, global contexts, and interdisciplinary teaching.
  • Experience with and commitment to Indigenous education, including teaching EFP 10 courses that center First Peoples voices, literature, and writing.
  • Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated excellence in inquiry-based teaching in Humanities and / or interdisciplinary settings.
  • Skilled in using a wide variety of strategies to meet the needs of a diverse student body, especially in a girl-centered environment.
