Ontario SUE (Subsurface Utility Engineering) Technicians will have experience in a construction-related field position. As a SUE Technician, you will be responsible for working both individually and in a team environment. Your primary responsibility is to designate/locate utilities and collect field data associated with providing services conforming to Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) practices and their standards as per ASCE 38-22. This includes but is not limited to designating various types of subsurface utilities using electromagnetic (EM) Cable and pipe locate sets and other equipment. Other associated tasks may include, collecting and documenting data, trouble-shooting issues, and effectively communicating with client representatives on site and the project team leader.
We are currently seeking a SUE Technician with 5+ years of field experience. This role will provide coverage for the GTA and surrounding areas as required.
This is a unionized position and therefore the wages are determined as per the collective agreement and based on the number of years of SUE Technician experience. This job posting is for an existing vacancy.
The expected wage for this position is in the range of $36.21 (5 years of experience) - $38.21 (6+ years of experience) per hour.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Read, understand, interpret, and correlate utility records including plans, as-builts, and drawings to determine the presence and existence of underground and/or aerial utilities
- Understand SUE Standards, ASCE 38-22 “Standard Guideline for Investigating and Documenting Existing Utilities and the associated SUE Quality Levels D, C, B, and A
- Operate various types of geophysical equipment’s to designate, locate, and mark underground facilities within a specified work area for pre-engineering purposes
- Identify and characterize underground and/or aerial utility infrastructure of all types including but not limited to; gas, water, hydro (electrical), telecommunications, and sewer infrastructure
- Knowledge and experience to utilize a push-camera, sonde, and/or conductive rod to complete designations for open pipe systems including but not limited sewer line laterals to individual properties and sewer main lines within the public right-of-way or on private property
- Ability to uncover (open) manholes and/or catch basins to collect invert data using measuring tools and equipment
- Understanding and ability to collect invert and obvert measurements from sewer related maintenance holes
- Ability to complete field sketches, notations by hand and/or digitally
- Manage and/or support the coordination and completion of hydrovac operations on-site
- Ability to complete Confined Space Entry’s (CSE) and inspections
- Ability to use “GPS” technologies to collect the x/y/z location of utility markings and/or utilities exposed during SUE QLA Investigations
- Liaison, with surveying crews and other third-party services, such as specialized traffic control, police services, etc. where required
- Follow and conform to safe working practices and abide by all safety rules and regulations
- Other duties as assigned
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5 or more years of SUE Technician experience and utility designation of various utilities
- Must possess a valid G level driver’s license accompanied with a clean driver abstract
- Experience and understanding of the ASCE 38-22 Standards, including associated (SUE) Quality Levels
- Experience and understanding in Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) services and equipment for both outdoor and indoor investigations is an asset
- Minimum education: Highschool, and/or College or Technical program (Civil Engineering or Architectural)
Ontario Regional Common Ground Alliance (ORCGA) Damage Prevention Technician (DPT) Certification is an asset - Confined Space Entry (CSE) Trained is an asset
- General knowledge of local damage prevention regulations, utilities, and the construction industry
- Able to travel within Ontario and work either day and/or night shifts
- Ability to work on job sites outdoors for long periods in various weather and terrain conditions
- Ability to multi-task, plan and organize workloads to meet scheduled deadlines with minimal or no direct supervision
- Computer skills and experience with various types of software’s (Microsoft Suite; Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)
- Demonstrated professional oral and written communication skills
