Compensation Range

$6,631.67 - $9,533.25 CAD Monthly

JOB SUMMARY

The Statistical Analyst & Database Manager will conduct statistical analyses and manage databases for multiple studies (both single-center and multi-center) within the division of Nephrology and the Multi Organ Transplant Program. Some of the ongoing studies you will participate in include studies on organ transplantation, chronic kidney disease, and screening for mental health concerns, adherence and quality of life. The role will perform statistical analyses, consult with researchers on study design and application of statistical methods, and assist in the maintenance and further development of our registry and related database systems. Working with a team of nephrologists, research staff, and graduate students at BCCH, the analyst supports a wide scope of analytical needs including integrating large and varied data sources, coordinating and facilitating database development, and generating data exports for different analyses. Additional responsibilities include liaising with project team members and other data users, assisting with sample tracking systems, and contributing to study design and statistical method plans. The analyst works as a team player, collaborating and building relationships with clinical and scientific staff as well as with national and international collaborators.

ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS

The Statistical Analyst will report directly to the study principal investigator. They will work in association with other research team members involved on the projects, including research and clerical staff and graduate student trainees. They will consult with the biostatistics team located at the BCCH Research Institute, to co-develop analytical approaches to different projects, and for support in the analysis as required. They will also interact and liaise with additional internal and external co-investigators and project partners.

WORK PERFORMED

The Statistical Analyst will participate in the following areas with the expectation that as work experience and knowledge increases duties will become more diversified.

Statistical Analyses:

- Consulting with and/or advising researchers on study design, analysis and the type of application of statistical methods.

- Consulting with senior statisticians on analysis development and approach within the research institute and with collaborating investigator teams.
- Conducting statistical analyses and interpreting results, in R.
- Evaluating statistical methods, programmes and packages for use.
- Integrating data from multiple source materials, including health charts and online databases, to develop merged core datasets.
- Assist with study design and analysis plan aspects of project grant applications for funding.

Database Management:

- Develop and refine study database infrastructure according to study and analytic workflows.
- Manage and maintain core program databases including data field revisions, data replication, reporting and documentation.
- Design and implement data quality check system to ensure data accuracy.
- Perform database administration tasks including security administration and user management.
- Implement and refine data infrastructure to incorporate the infrastructure into analytic workflows.
- Design and develop data queries and scripts to extract, transform, load diverse patient, outcomes and population-based data sets, thereby enabling effective interpretation and analysis.
- Update and maintain current study registries and sample tracking systems on electronic platforms such as REDCap and Excel.
- Liaise and enable data sharing with other research team members.

Other:

- Work effectively and collaboratively with others in an interdisciplinary clinical/research environment.
- Support project objectives by actively participating at team meetings and establishing effective communications with project staff and co-investigators.
- Communicate and build rapport with participants, families, and various members of a multi-disciplinary clinic team.

CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR

The Statistical Analyst is required to conduct all activities in an ethical manner. Procedures or data recorded must be accurate and must reflect the work performed. All activities are accountable to the PI. Failure to do so with due diligence could impede study progress and compromise data that require many resources to prepare, maintain, and analyze.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

The study principal investigator will provide general supervision and will oversee performance and results of the projects. Once onboarded, the individual should be able to work independently under general direction. Help will always be available for problem solving and guidance.

SUPERVISION GIVEN

May give technical guidance to members of the research team and trainees at all levels.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

- Post-graduate degree in Statistics. Minimum of two years of related experience in research analysis, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Graduate degree in Statistics or a related field (e.g. Data Science). Previous experience with analysis of medical and/or pediatric datasets will be preferred. Knowledge of study design, data collection, data cleaning and analysis. Demonstrated ability to perform advanced data manipulation, analysis and information presentation using database, spreadsheet, and statistical software. Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills including the ability to comprehend complex issues and related data/information and present information in concise and meaningful ways. Must have strong interpersonal skills and be able to communicate effectively including the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships. Must be detail-orientated and possess strong organizational skills. Must possess strong computer skills (including Microsoft office), experience with databases, proficiency with REDCap, and statistical programming skills, preferably in R.

All positions in the Department of Pediatrics at BC Children's Hospital require a Criminal Record Check (CRC). A pre-employment CRC is required as part of the recruitment process and any offer of employment is contingent pending positive results of the CRC. As a condition of employment, will have to obtain certification in the ethical conduct of research involving humans (on-line course) within 1 month of the start of employment.
