PowerBuilder & SQL Developer – Azure Lift and Shift Migration

Role Overview:

We are seeking an experienced PowerBuilder & SQL Developer with hands on expertise in supporting and modernizing legacy applications and leading their transition from on premise infrastructure to Microsoft Azure.

This role is ideal for someone who understands traditional client server PowerBuilder applications and can contribute to a cloud migration initiative involving refactoring, re platforming, and optimizing workloads for Azure.

Key Responsibilities:

PowerBuilder Development & Modernization

• Develop, maintain, and enhance existing PowerBuilder client–server applications.

• Assess legacy PowerBuilder codebases to identify dependencies, integration points, performance issues, and cloud readiness.

• Refactor or remediate PowerBuilder components to ensure compatibility with Azure hosted databases and services.

Azure Lift and Shift (Primary Focus)

• Work closely with the cloud engineering team to support the migration of PowerBuilder applications from on prem servers to Azure.

• Participate in re platforming activities, including:

o Migrating databases to Azure SQL Database or SQL Managed Instance.

o Adapting application configurations for Azure VM, Azure Files, or hybrid network setups.

o Ensuring authentication, connectivity, and integration points work seamlessly post migration.

• Assist in testing, validating, and stabilizing applications after they have been lifted into Azure.

SQL Development & Database Optimization

• Design, maintain, and optimize SQL databases prior to and after migration to Azure.

• Rewrite or optimize SQL queries, stored procedures, and triggers to ensure performance in cloud environments.

• Implement indexing, partitioning, and tuning strategies suited for Azure SQL platforms.

Cloud Ready Architecture Support

• Collaborate on modernizing components that integrate with PowerBuilder applications (APIs, file storage, batch jobs).

• Contribute to decisions around Azure services such as Azure App Services, Azure Storage, Azure Key Vault, and monitoring.

Testing, Troubleshooting & Production Support

• Conduct root cause analysis for cloud specific issues such as connectivity, performance degradation, and network latency.

• Support smoke testing, regression testing, and post migration validation.

• Ensure application resilience, logging, and monitoring once hosted in Azure.

Cross Functional Collaboration

• Partner with business analysts, cloud architects, DBAs, and project teams to ensure a smooth migration journey.

• Prepare technical documentation related to migration steps, remediation work, and cloud deployment requirements.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

Core Technical Skills

• Strong PowerBuilder development experience (versions 10–12.6 or Appeon PB preferred).

• Advanced SQL programming (T SQL, PL/SQL, or similar) with deep database design and optimization skills.

• Experience with SQL Server and comfort working with Azure SQL services.

• Understanding of client server architectures and their transition patterns to cloud.

Azure Migration Skills (Highly Preferred)

• Experience supporting lift and shift migrations from on prem to Azure.

• Familiarity with:

o Azure SQL Database / Managed Instances

o Azure VMs and networking (VNets, VPN, ExpressRoute)

o Azure Storage (Files, Blob)

o Application configuration in hybrid cloud environments

• Knowledge of dependency mapping and identifying cloud blockers in legacy applications.

Soft Skills

• Strong analytical and problem solving capabilities—especially around legacy system behavior.

• Clear and effective communication with both technical and non technical stakeholders.

• Ability to work in a fast paced, migration focused environment.

Nice to Have

• Experience with CI/CD pipelines or DevOps practices related to migrations.

• Familiarity with modernization of legacy applications (APIs, microservices, etc.).

• Exposure to Appeon PowerBuilder (Cloud Edition) or modernization paths from classic PB.
