Job description

Description

Alberta Reliability Standards (ARS) are the requirements followed by the AESO and Alberta market participants to provide for the reliable operation of the Alberta interconnected electric system (AIES). The AESO recommends the adoption of ARS that are based on the reliability standards of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and Western Electric Coordinating Council (WECC) as well as other ARS that amend, supplement, or replace these reliability standards.

We are looking for an engineer or analyst to coordinate and guide cross-functional teams to develop ARS for Alberta’s electricity industry. The seniority level will be defined based on the successful candidate's experience and qualifications. This is a great opportunity for a professional with broad knowledge of high voltage facilities, transmission system operations, and protection & control systems to lead and participate in stakeholder engagements with external industry working groups.

This full-time opportunity offers a competitive salary, and a variable pay program. We also have paid vacation and flex time, health and dental benefits, mental health support, a defined contribution pension plan, and learning and development opportunities as part of your overall compensation package. We support a hybrid work environment, where the team is in the office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Mondays and Fridays are flexible for where you work best.

Key accountabilities :

Facilitate internal and external technical working groups related to ARS development to drive consensus and innovation.

Draft reliability standards, supporting documentation, and stakeholder engagement materials.

Coordinate and support stakeholder engagement processes to ensure transparency and collaboration.

Represent AESO in North American standards discussions, contributing to the evolution of reliability practices.

Monitor and report on NERC and WECC developments to inform Alberta’s strategic direction.

Provide guidance during implementation and compliance monitoring phases of the ARS lifecycle.

Conduct research and analysis to support the development of new standards and enhancements.

Support the Reliability Standards Sync Up Project, ensuring effective integration of reliability standards in the Alberta electricity industry.

Signs you will enjoy working in this team :

You thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment and are looking for an opportunity to embark on transformative change.

You enjoy working in a team of bright professionals and participating in lively discussions.

You embrace change and pivot and adapt with ease.

You like working in a diverse atmosphere – our team and colleagues have varied backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.

You enjoy being a subject-matter expert that collaborates with and provides technical leadership across the organization.

Signs you will enjoy this role :

You are interested in influencing practices and standards that have industry-wide impact.

You have an aptitude for asking the right questions, listening, and ensuring others feel heard.

You see the importance of making quality decisions that involve considering options and forming appropriate recommendations and actions.

You are a curious learner and enjoy challenging yourself to continue sharpening your technical, communication, and business skills.

A combination of these skills and experiences will set you up for success in this role :

At least four years of experience as an electrical industry professional working with transmission system asset management, facilities design, real-time operations, or regulatory compliance monitoring.

Demonstrated aptitude in internal and external relationship building, group facilitation, and stakeholder engagement experience. The ability to guide large engagements in decision making in a variety of environments ranging from collaborative to oppositional is essential.

Applied use of project and program management and administration tools, including understanding of cost impact with regulatory requirements.

Working knowledge of electricity industry rules and standards, compliance monitoring, and audit process.

Application deadline : March 12, 2026
