Job Description

About the Role

Reporting to the Manager – Software Engineering, a Software Engineer designs and executes technical solutions for internal development and maintenance of products and services to support WildBrain’s goals. This is a one-year position to support the development and maintenance of applications that power high-volume digital publishing and reporting workflows. This role focuses on analyzing software requirements, building and maintaining backend services, and developing integrations with third-party platforms.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Software Development & Maintenance
    • Analyze and interpret functional and technical requirements for new initiatives and system enhancements.
    • Design, develop, and maintain Laravel/PHP applications supporting high-volume, high-performance VOD publishing workflows, reporting tools, and integrations.
    • Maintain and enhance existing applications to ensure reliability, scalability, and operational stability.
  • System Integration & APIs
    • Develop and maintain integrations with external services including YouTube and other third-party APIs.
    • Design and implement middleware solutions to support integration between first-party systems, third-party platforms, and internal databases.
  • Collaboration & Delivery
    • Work with project stakeholders to support scoping, effort estimation, and timeline planning for software development initiatives.
    • Collaborate with platform engineering teams to design and deploy robust and cost-efficient workloads in AWS and private cloud environments.
  • Engineering Standards & Quality
    • Adhere to established engineering standards, policies, and best practices for development, testing, and deployment.
    • Participate in peer code reviews and contribute to continuous improvement of development practices and code quality.
  • Documentation & Knowledge Sharing
    • Create, maintain, and validate technical and functional documentation supporting system design, development, and operations.
    • Ensure documentation is accurate, complete, and aligned with engineering and project standards.

Qualifications

Skills & Experience

  • What You Bring
    • Experience developing and maintaining web applications using PHP and Laravel.
    • Ability to analyze software requirements and translate business needs into reliable technical solutions.
    • Experience supporting both new development initiatives and ongoing maintenance of production systems.
    • Experience building integrations with third-party APIs and external platforms.
    • Ability to design and implement middleware and service integrations between internal and external systems.
    • Experience working collaboratively with product managers, business stakeholders, and engineering teams.
    • Familiarity with software development lifecycle practices, including code reviews, testing, and version control.
    • Strong written communication skills and ability to produce technical documentation and design artifacts.
    • A proactive mindset with a willingness to learn new technologies and improve existing systems.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or related field and/or post graduate Internet related Certificate, or equivalent working experience
  • 5+ years' experience developing high traffic applications with PHP (Laravel) and PHP
  • 5+ years' experience with SQL, at least one DBMS, Database Design, NoSQL, performance tuning and migration/ETL
  • Understanding of front-end development, libraries, and frameworks (HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, jQuery UI, Bootstrap, Vue, React)
  • Understanding of and comfortable working with continuous integration pipelines [Git], tools [GitHub Actions], and automation [Docker, Swarm]
  • Able to adhere to and keep up to date with current and evolving best practices relating to security and development methodologies
  • Strong understanding of integrating with third party web services and systems via REST APIs
  • Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms and design patterns
  • Familiarity with Big Query a plus
  • Nice to Have
    • Experience working with video publishing platforms, media workflows, or digital content distribution systems.
    • Experience integrating with content platforms such as YouTube APIs.
    • Familiarity with AWS or cloud-based infrastructure.
    • Experience supporting high-volume, high-availability applications.
    • Exposure to CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, or containerized environments.

Total Rewards

At WildBrain, we strive for equitable and consistent pay practices within a robust total rewards framework. Compensation may vary within the same role based on experience, performance, specialized expertise, and overall impact.

Compensation: $85,000 - 95,000 CAD. Base salary is part of a comprehensive total rewards package that includes:
