We’re looking for our next VP, Property Treaty. Could It Be You?

As Vice President of Property Treaty, you will be responsible for the strategic direction of the property reinsurance portfolio.

This include providing industry-leading underwriting analysis and decision making, in alignment with Munich Re’s risk appetite and guidelines.

As the Vice President of Property Treaty, you will be responsible for reviewing requests for treaty reinsurance, evaluate risk exposures and determine premiums, rates, scope of coverage and all other relevant reinsurance terms and conditions for acceptance or declination of reinsurance proposals in accordance with company’s underwriting philosophy and policies.

In accordance with established guidelines, terms and agreements and after any required referrals, the Vice President of Property Treaty is authorized to accept / decline Property treaty business (new and renewal) in line with UW authority.

Direct reports to this role include the AVP, Property Treaty, Senior Underwriter, Specialist Property Treaty and Underwriter.

  • Act as member of the Underwriting Management Team, provide leadership, and oversee the efficient operation of the property treaty departments.
  • Articulate and contribute to the long-term vision and strategy for the property reinsurance portfolio that responds to the marketplace while capitalizing on the company’s strong franchise in Canada.
  • Hire, develop and retain a top talent, high-performing team that is fully engaged and recognized as experts internally within Munich Re and externally with clients and partners
  • Establish and implement appropriate pricing philosophies and strategies to accurately reflect the underlying risk of the portfolio.
  • Provide sound underwriting recommendations and decisions to ensure business is underwritten with the goal of long-term profitably.
  • Engage with Corporate Underwriting and ensure that business is written in compliance with Munich Re’s guidelines and policies.
  • Develop strong relationships and actively collaborate with other departments including Client Management, Corporate Risk & Actuarial and Finance.
  • You will be responsible for reporting on the operations of the treaty department as well as the day-to-day leadership of the property team.
  • You will take an active role in client contact and development, as well as develop and maintain industry contacts by attending industry functions and via regular client / broker visits.
  • You will assist the CUO in carrying out policies established by executive management.
  • You will assist with Head Office facultative functions as directed by the CUO.
  • You will actively participate in or lead client team(s).

Qualifications

First and foremost, you will demonstrate strong leadership and achievement, a strong work ethic, enthusiasm towards change and a drive to make a difference.

In addition, we are looking for the following qualifications :

  • A Bachelors’ Degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics or equivalent.
  • Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) / Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP) or equivalent "on-the-job" education or training.
  • At least 12-years demonstrated underwriting or actuarial expertise and leadership in Canada across property programs with a preference for reinsurance experience.
  • Exceptional people leadership skills with a track record of leading underwriting and / or actuarial & technical teams.
  • Excellent analytical, negotiating and investigative competencies.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong computer ability and working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Business and general insurance acumen.
  • Adaptability and flexibility.
  • French / German language skills an asset.
