Unit Head
Desired Qualifications:
– Education, certification, or extensive knowledge of child care and
programming;
– Experience working with children;
– Ability to work collaboratively with others;
– Experience supervising a team of staff is preferred;
– Ability to accept guidance and supervision.
Minimum Qualifications:
– Desire and willingness to work with children outdoors, in an overnight
and rustic setting;
– At least 20 years old (or by the end of the calendar year);
– Ability to develop programs and creatively manage children in a
positive way;
– Ability to manage and supervise a collaborative living space;
– Good character, integrity, and adaptability;
– Enthusiasm, sense of humour, patience and self-control;
– Ability to creatively schedule programs and staff;
– Ability and experience in supervising staff and campers;
– Ability and willingness to accept supervision and guidance.
Mission Statement:
We are committed to making residential camp accessible to children in
partnership with the Jewish community, and are dedicated to providing a fun
and safe pluralistic environment for campers and staff to build Jewish
identity, a love of nature, positive relationships, life skills, and
independence.
General Responsibility: Identify Camper Needs
– Know and develop a positive relationship with each camper;
– Understand behavioral impacts and how to assess and implement
strategies to improve;
– Review each camper’s profile and plan for the camper accordingly;
– Know the developmental needs of the age group and each camper;
– Be vigilant about the campers overall well being;
General Responsibility: Facilitate Programming
– Plan and/or delegate responsibility for evening programs and work
within a budget, if so assigned;
– Monitor bunks’ participation throughout the assigned weekly schedule,
and ensure all campers are participating appropriately in bunk
activities, hobbies, rainy day programs and all camp programs;
– Communicate all program activities to the Unit/Section staff and
monitor their communication to the campers;
– Observe and/or participate in bunk and Unit/Section programs;
– Implement programs for the unit that are creative, fun,
developmentally appropriate, and meets the needs and interests of the
campers.
General Responsibility: Staff Supervision
– Arrange daily meeting time (round-up);
– Ensure Counsellors are appropriately supervising all bunks in
appropriate compliance of daily procedures, such as wake-up, cabin
clean-up, meal times, general activities, Tuck, and bedtime;
– Ensure all sign-up forms, bunk activity requests, and surveys are
completed in a timely manner;
– Encourage staff to develop positive relationships with their campers;
– Teach staff how to understand the needs of their campers;
– Teach staff to create an environment where the camper feels
emotionally supported and physically safe;
– Teach staff methods for providing opportunities for the camper to
achieve success;
– Teach staff appropriate methods of dealing with camper behavior;
– Teach staff to understand the needs of their group and facilitate
group-work skills;
– Formally meet with Unit/Section staff once per week;
– Complete mid summer and final evaluations of assigned staff;
– In matters of continuing concern regarding a staff member, inform the Head Counsellor.
