About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager of Engineering this position is responsible for providing engineering technical expertise for the planning, design, protection, automation, renewal and ongoing performance of electrical substations and associated assets.

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide engineering expertise for the design, expansion, renewal and modernization of electrical substations, including major station equipment, grounding systems, protection and control, and station auxiliary systems.
  • Perform and review protection, fault current, grounding, equipment duty, arc flash and station capacity studies, and develop relay settings, control logic and protection philosophies.
  • Develop and maintain engineering standards, specifications and design criteria for substation equipment, protection and control systems, and station automation/SCADA.
  • Lead and manage substation capital projects from initial scope and budgeting through design, procurement, construction, testing, commissioning and close-out, including coordination of consultants, contractors, suppliers and internal teams.
  • Support the organization's asset management and capital planning programs through condition and risk assessments, lifecycle planning and recommendations for equipment maintenance, refurbishment and replacement.
  • Provide engineering support for planned outages, equipment failures and emergency restoration, including failure investigations, root cause analysis and corrective recommendations.
  • Review technical submissions, equipment applications and emerging technologies, and ensure designs and projects comply with applicable regulatory requirements and industry standards.

Seeking the following qualifications:

  • Requires a four-year university degree in electrical engineering from an accredited post-secondary institution or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent by the PEO.
  • Must be registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO).
  • Minimum five years of substation engineering experience, preferably in a utility environment.
  • Requires a competent knowledge of utility substation equipment and systems including protection systems, power transformers, instrument transformers, medium voltage switching and protective devices, AC & DC systems, grounding equipment, automation equipment, power quality monitoring equipment etc.
  • Must be familiar with applicable industry standards including, but not limited to, CSA, IEEE, IEC, ESA standards and Ontario Regulation O.Reg. 22/04
  • Project Management skills.
  • Valid Class G driver's licence with the ability to perform field work as required.
