Job description

The Department of Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine (Faculty), University of Ottawa (uOttawa) and The Ottawa Hospital (TOH/Hospital) is looking for a visionary leader with excellence in academic and clinical leadership to be its next Head of the Division of Dermatology.

Responsibilities

The Division Head is accountable to the Chair/Head of the Department of Medicine in fulfilling the mission, vision and goals of the Department, the Hospital and the Faculty, in particular as they relate to the Division. The Division Head holds a joint appointment as the university head for academics and hospital head for clinical services.

The Division Head is part of the leadership team of the Department of Medicine. As such, the Division Head will work with department, hospital, and faculty leadership. This role will require on average one to two days per week for administrative activities with the remainder of time dedicated to clinical, academic and/or research activities. The Division Head will collaborate with the Department Chair/Head to set annual goals and objectives.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be a nationally/internationally respected leader and scholar, with advanced interpersonal skills, who has demonstrated academic and clinical excellence. The individual will help shape the overall vision and strategic direction for the Division, which aims to innovate, support, and practice the highest quality patient-centred care, research and education.

The successful candidate must hold an MD degree; be a member of, or be eligible to be a member of, the Canadian Medical Protective Association; have or be eligible for certification in Dermatology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and have, or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario. The successful candidate will be eligible to hold an academic appointment at the rank of an Associate Professor or higher at the University of Ottawa. Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

The University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital are bilingual institutions and therefore in the case of potentially successful candidates of equal ability, a bilingual (French/English) candidate would be preferred.

Additional Information

The Division of Dermatology provides exemplary care to patients with a wide variety of cutaneous diseases within the Ottawa region, and outreach care to patients in Eastern Ontario, West Quebec and Nunavut. The division is focusing on the development of priority programs including skin cancer with a focus on Mohs surgery, transplant patients, mycosis fungoides and melanoma, inflammatory dermatoses such as severe psoriasis, dermatitis and hidradenitis suppurativa, as well as laser surgery. We are based in the Dermatology Centre of Excellence within The Ottawa Hospital. The division is known for its very successful Dermatology Residency Training Program with 20 residents. It is our plan to further foster and support clinical research and educational curriculum development.

The Ottawa Hospital is a 1445-bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at three main inpatient sites (Civic, General, Heart Institute) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside). The hospital provides approximately 67,450 inpatient admissions, 178,200 emergency visits and one million ambulatory care visits annually.

Ground-breaking medical research is conducted through The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI). We rank among the top 4 hospitals in Canada for Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) funded research and overall research funding. Over 2,300 researchers, trainees, and staff contribute to a highly productive research environment, generating more than 2,200 scientific publications annually, including many high-impact studies.

The Department of Medicine is a research-intensive Department. Currently, 24 members hold a Canada Research Chair or a University Research Chair. The Department receives approximately $60 million per year in external research funding and members publish approximately 1200 peer-reviewed publications annually.

The Faculty of Medicine is a nationally recognized leader in medical education and research, contributing significantly to the University of Ottawa’s standing among Canada’s top research-intensive universities. The University of Ottawa is the largest bilingual (English/French) university in the world, and the Faculty of Medicine is the first and largest bilingual medical school in Canada.

The City of Ottawa offers a vibrant, multicultural, and bilingual environment with access to diverse cultural, recreational, and outdoor activities, making it an excellent place to live and work.

The Department of Medicine is committed to upholding the values of equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility in our living, learning, and work environments. We encourage qualified applicants from all groups with historical and/or current barriers to equity to apply. Upon request, accommodations are available throughout the selection process.

Terms of Employment

The position of Division Head is a five-year term appointment with the possibility of reappointment for an additional five-year term.

The income for this position is derived from a variety of sources including but not limited to clinical billings (fee-for-service), salary support (AFP) as well as honorariums/stipends. Health and welfare benefits including extended health, dental and disability insurance as well as life insurance are offered to full-time physicians.

Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority. We sincerely thank all applicants for their interest; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.

This is a full-time position.
