Venture outside the ordinary - TMX Careers

The TMX group of companies includes leading global exchanges such as the Toronto Stock Exchange, Montreal Exchange, and numerous innovative organizations enhancing capital markets. United as a global team, we’re connecting cross-functionally, traversing industries and geographies, moving opportunity into action, advancing global economic growth, and propelling progress. Through a rich exchange of ideas, meaningful collaboration, and a nimble operating model, we're powering some of the nation's most critical systems, fueling capital formation and innovation, bringing increased opportunity to business visionaries, product ingenuity to consumers, and career exploration to our team.

Ready to be part of the action?

We are seeking a Database Engineer to manage, support, and modernize our server-computing database infrastructure. In this role, you will champion a "Database as Code" philosophy, leveraging automation and programmatic systems management to ensure software currency, seamless patching, and optimal upgrades across our relational database management systems.

As a key technical resource, you will combine deep technical expertise with strong analytical problem-solving skills to support our mission-critical, high-volume database environments.

  • Reports to: Senior Manager, Clearing Technology Services

  • Job Location: Hybrid (2-3 days in office) - based in Toronto, ON.

Key Accountabilities

  • System Availability & Issue Resolution: Serve as the SQL Server Subject Matter Expert (SME) to resolve complex database issues. Lead short- and long-term root cause analysis, collaborate across engineering teams, and coordinate with external vendors during critical system events.

  • Infrastructure Optimization: Identify, install, and configure database software and hardware requirements to build highly stable, modern, and high-performing database systems.

  • Performance Tuning & Monitoring: Lead efforts to design and improve automated monitoring for database health and availability. Analyze performance metrics to recommend and execute tuning strategies across database configurations, storage, and application SQL queries.

  • Disaster Recovery & Data Protection: Oversee routine backup audits, conduct regular test restores to validate data integrity, and actively participate in scheduled Disaster Recovery exercises.

  • Strategic Standards & Collaboration: Enforce database engineering standards and partner with Development Squads and software vendors to design, review, and deploy database schema changes.

  • Operational & Project Support: Deliver Level 2 escalation support for day-to-day operations and project execution, participating in a 24/7 on-call rotation to support our continuous operations.

Must Have(s)

  • Professional Experience: Minimum of 5 years of hands-on database management and administration experience.

  • Database Expertise: Deep technical expertise in SQL Server, with additional working knowledge of Oracle and Postgres.

  • Scale & Volume: Proven experience supporting real-time applications and large-scale, multi-terabyte (TB) databases.

  • High Availability & DR: Strong hands-on experience with database data protection, Disaster Recovery design, high-availability setups, and Oracle RAC administration.

  • Automation & Scripting: Strong programmatic mindset with excellent scripting skills (e.g., Powershell, Python, Perl) to automate deployments and support a "DB as Code" infrastructure model.

  • Infrastructure & Cloud: Practical knowledge of Windows, Linux, Virtualization, and Cloud technologies.

  • Soft Skills: Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with a collaborative team spirit and a big-picture delivery mindset.

Nice to Have(s)

  • Prior experience in the Financial Capital Markets industry.

  • Experience executing complex data migrations between differing platforms or dissimilar environments.

Salary Range: $110K/year - $120K/year CAD. Please note that the salary range included is a guideline only. The salary offered may vary based on factors, including, but not limited to, the successful candidate’s relevant knowledge, skills, and experience.
