This role involves assisting with the loading and unloading of vessels, securing boats to docks, and maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the dock area. The successful candidate will play a critical part in supporting vessel operations by handling equipment and cargo efficiently while adhering to safety protocols. This position requires physical stamina, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team to meet operational schedules. Ultimately, the dockhand contributes to the overall efficiency and safety of port operations, enhancing the experience for vessel operators and customers alike.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks including lifting heavy objects and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Basic knowledge of maritime safety practices and dock operations.
  • Valid work authorization to be employed in Canada.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working as a dockhand or in a similar maritime or logistics role.
  • Certification in WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) and First Aid/CPR.
  • Familiarity with operating dockside machinery such as forklifts or cranes.
  • Knowledge of local maritime regulations and environmental safety standards.
  • Ability to speak multiple languages to assist diverse teams and clientele.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in mooring and unmooring vessels safely and efficiently.
  • Load and unload cargo, supplies, and equipment from boats and docks.
  • Operate dockside equipment such as winches, cranes, and forklifts under supervision.
  • Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the dock area to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Communicate effectively with vessel operators and team members to coordinate dock activities.
  • Perform routine inspections of dock facilities and report any maintenance needs or safety hazards.
  • Adhere strictly to all safety regulations and company policies during all dock operations.

Skills:

The required skills such as physical endurance and basic maritime safety knowledge are applied daily to ensure the safe handling of vessels and cargo, preventing accidents and damage. Effective communication skills enable the dockhand to coordinate seamlessly with vessel operators and team members, ensuring operations proceed smoothly and on schedule. Attention to detail is critical when inspecting equipment and dock areas to identify potential hazards and maintain compliance with safety standards. Preferred skills like machinery operation and certifications enhance the dockhand’s ability to perform specialized tasks, increasing overall efficiency and safety. Multilingual abilities, when present, facilitate better interaction with a diverse workforce and clientele, improving teamwork and customer service.

We offer:

  • Profit Sharing
  • Employee Discounts & Partner Discount Programs
  • The chance to be part of a financially stable, well-respected, truly Canadian company with opportunities for growth from coast to coast
  • Continuous, quality education and training on our products and sales techniques

Compensation:

The starting hourly rate for this position is $17.70.
