About Us

The Correctional Services Division of the Department of Justice is responsible for the administration and operation of community and custody-based programs and services for individuals in custody and young persons. Within the Correctional Services core business area there are two programs: community corrections and correctional facilities. Each of these program areas is broken down into closely related activities that have a specific impact on the program's target group.

About Our Opportunity

As the Sentence Administrator, you will report to the Manager of Sentence Administration and are responsible for documentation of all admissions, releases, court appearances, transfers to other provincial and federal facilities and fines within the Correctional Facility. The Sentence Administrator also inputs and keeps information relating to individuals in custody in the Justice Enterprise Information Network (JEIN). This includes loss of remission, levels of misconduct, temporary absences, court orders and forms. The incumbent interprets warrants and other court orders, and calculates sentences for each individual in custody, using practices outlined in policy and procedures and following orders as outlined in various court documents. The Sentence Administrator maintains regular communication with video court staff, Court Services, Admission & Discharge staff, Justice Centre and Sheriff Services staff and facility management to ensure all parties are aware of potentially high-risk situations; performs information searches and prepares reports as necessary.

Qualifications and Experience

To be considered for this opportunity, you have completed Grade 12 and in addition you hold five or more years of related experience in the criminal justice field. You have related experience in Corrections, Court Services, policing, or experience working in a law office. An acceptable equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered. Experience in accounting and research and analysis will also be considered. You have experience and competency in typing, word processing, and other standard computer applications as required.

This position experiences frequent interruptions and the incumbent will be responsible for managing a high volume of work, multiple demands, and priorities. During the interview, the candidate must demonstrate that they possess the self-motivation, initiative and organizational skills required to effectively handle multiple tasks and high-volume workloads. You must demonstrate well-developed interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work harmoniously as a member of a team, along with sound judgement and a solid respect and ability to work with highly confidential records and information. Previous experience using JEIN would be a definite asset.

We will assess the above qualifications using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Equivalency

Applicants relying on education and experience equivalencies must demonstrate such equivalencies in their application.

  • While there is no shift work associated with this position, overtime and disruptions to personal and family life due to position responsibilities, workload, and other unplanned activities may occur. (Typically, the hours are between 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, this may vary depending on operational needs). Work on Sundays and holidays may be required depending on operational demands.
