Job Summary and Tutor Requirements

We are seeking an experienced, patient, and enthusiastic tutor to support students with learning disabilities, autism, and other diverse learning needs.

The ideal tutor will:

  • Have experience working with students with learning disabilities, autism, ADHD, or other learning differences.
  • Be confident supporting students at the elementary or secondary school level, depending on the student's needs.
  • Be patient, encouraging, energetic, and able to build a positive rapport with students.
  • Adapt teaching methods and learning strategies to suit each student's individual strengths, needs, and learning style.
  • Be flexible and able to adjust lessons based on the student's engagement, abilities, and progress.
  • Have strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Be comfortable working collaboratively with parents, caregivers, and other professionals when appropriate.
  • Have excellent English communication skills.
  • Be able to create a supportive, respectful, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Experience with individualized education plans (IEPs), assistive technology, or specialized learning strategies is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Assess the student's academic strengths, challenges, and learning needs.
  • Develop individualized tutoring strategies and lesson plans.
  • Support students with homework, assignments, projects, test preparation, and academic skills.
  • Teach and reinforce study skills, organization, time management, note-taking, and test-taking strategies.
  • Use a variety of teaching approaches and accommodations to help the student understand and retain information.
  • Break down complex concepts into manageable steps.
  • Provide positive, constructive feedback and encouragement.
  • Help students develop confidence, independence, and effective learning habits.
  • Monitor and communicate the student's progress to parents or caregivers.
  • Maintain a patient, respectful, and inclusive approach at all times.

About the Student

Students we support may have a range of learning needs, including learning disabilities, autism, ADHD, executive functioning challenges, anxiety, sensory processing differences, communication challenges, dysgraphia, or other exceptionalities.

Each student is unique. Tutors should be prepared to:

  • Adapt instruction to the student's individual learning profile.
  • Recognize and build upon the student's strengths.
  • Provide appropriate accommodations and learning strategies.
  • Be sensitive to sensory, communication, emotional, and academic needs.
  • Create a calm, supportive, and encouraging learning environment.
  • Focus on both academic progress and building the student's confidence and independence.
