Your Opportunity:

Reporting to the Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) Manager, the Associate Manager / Assistant Manager is responsible for the direct supervision and direction of Registered Nurses and Clinical Trial Coordinators (CTC), in collaboration with the CTU CTC Lead, within the CTU. This is a unique management role which assists in the oversight of the conduct of complex Pharmaceutical, Academic and Investigator sponsored trials offering new investigational treatments to cancer patients. The CTU enrolls approximately 350 patients into clinical trials annually, and maintains over 180 protocols in various stages of patient care. These trials offer innovative therapies not yet available on the market. The management of clinical trials requires strict compliance to high standards according to Health Canada, FDA regulations and Research Ethics Board reviews. The Unit is open to regulatory inspections including FDA, European Union and Health Canada Authorities at any time. A key focus of this role involves improving and standardizing tumor team processes and efficiencies across the Unit to meet the growing requirements and demands of oncology clinical trials. This role is involved in collaborating with Clinical Education in maintaining and continuously improving clinical trial orientation training for the Clinical Trial Nurses and Coordinators. This will involve working with provincial stakeholders to formalize and provide leadership support to new staff and ongoing training. This position coordinates coaching and performance discussions for their direct staff as required. The Assistant Manager must also perform all the duties of the CTU Manager when necessary.

Description:

Oversees daily operations including staff assignments, workload issues and serves as a mentor to the staff. Contact point for clinical trial nursing and coordinator concerns. Coordinates and conducts performance evaluations for direct report CTU staff with the assistance of the Manager, investigates complaints and resolves issues (both patient and staff related) and follows up where required. Involved in the interviewing/selection of new Clinical Trial Nurses and Coordinators in consultation with Human Resources Manages/administers collective agreement(s) for UNA and HSAA. Chairs scheduled unit staff meetings as required in collaboration with the Manager, manages and maintains staff workload balance between 14 specialized tumor groups including 35 Registered Nurses and 32 Clinical Trial Coordinators. In collaboration with the Quality & Regulatory team and CTU staff, works with pharmaceutical monitors onsite to assist the Clinical Trial Coordinators with sponsor issues/concerns. Coordinates internal process improvement initiatives as they relate to tumor group standardizations in practice/processes. Demonstrates and promotes teamwork in the interdisciplinary approach to patient care and clinical trials practices within the Clinical Trial Unit, and with supporting departments/external partners. Chair and/or participate in CTU working groups to plan, develop and implement new department specific initiatives and to develop and implement department specific initiatives/projects, policies/procedures. Facilitates, coordinates and supports educational initiatives for orientation, in-service and continuing education programming, and for changes in policy, procedure, protocols and technology to promote clinical competence of staff.
