Job description

Communities everywhere share the need for clean water. And as they work to meet that need, they’re facing new, more complex challenges every day. Our water professionals collaborate to contribute innovative ideas, guided by scientific rigor and a vision for sustainable growth. Every day, we’re helping communities improve, reuse, and protect our world’s most precious resource.

Join our team to deliver transformational projects that will benefit future generations. Grow with us, H2O+U.

You have the opportunity to join our dynamic team of engineering professionals that are working on projects throughout North America. By joining Stantec, you join a global engineering firm that enables you to work on leading-edge projects with water and wastewater experts.

Stantec’s Calgary office is seeking a Project Manager (Engineering, Water/Wastewater) to join our growing team to help support the Water Business Line. At Stantec’s Water Group, we’re committed to empowering our employees and providing a dynamic work environment that fosters growth and collaboration. When you join our team, you’ll benefit from:

  • Work directly with a larger, multidisciplinary team, fostering collaboration and innovative problem-solving.

  • Connection with experienced senior leaders who provide mentorship and guidance to support your professional development and with junior/intermediate peers who provide a strong team network.

  • Focus on large municipal water and wastewater treatment projects but may also include pump station and industrial water projects. These projects include feasibility studies, conceptual, preliminary, and detailed designs, along with on-site construction coordination for ongoing water and wastewater treatment projects.

Responsibilities:

As part of the Calgary Water team, you will lead the planning and delivery of complex municipal water and wastewater infrastructure projects. In this role, you will be responsible for managing multidisciplinary teams, maintaining strong client relationships, and ensuring projects are delivered in accordance with scope, schedule, budget, and quality expectations. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the planning and execution of complex water and wastewater treatment projects and related infrastructure from pursuit through delivery.

  • Leading and supporting project pursuits and proposal development, including defining scope, assembling project teams, and contributing to technical and commercial strategy.

  • Managing project deliverables, administering contracts, and overseeing project financial performance, schedules, and risk.

  • Coordinating and leading multidisciplinary design teams throughout all phases of a project lifecycle.

  • Overseeing the preparation of contract documents, including front‑ end contracts, detailed design drawings, and technical specifications.

  • Building, maintaining, and strengthening long‑ term client relationships through effective communication and delivery excellence.

  • Coordinating and conducting Quality Management reviews to ensure technical accuracy, consistency, and compliance with Stantec and client standards.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong foundation in engineering fundamentals, a collaborative mindset, and a commitment to delivering high‑ quality work. Key capabilities include:

  • Foundational technical understanding of municipal water, municipal wastewater, and industrial water treatment systems and associated engineering design practices.

  • Ability to apply engineering judgment at an appropriate level and recognize developing project issues and seeking guidance and support when required.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); familiarity with Access, Project, or similar tools is considered an asset.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey technical information to project team members and, with support, to clients and stakeholders.

  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and build positive working relationships with colleagues, clients, and external stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated ability to organize work, manage multiple tasks, and follow direction while meeting project schedules, budgets, and quality requirements.

  • Attention to detail, with the ability to review own work for accuracy, completeness, and alignment with project objectives.

  • Willingness to learn, ask questions, and actively contribute to problem‑ solving through critical and creative thinking.

  • Commitment to client service and the delivery of professional, high‑ quality engineering work products.

  • Professional, respectful, and positive communication style in both written and in‑ person interactions.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Civil, Chemical, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.

  • Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or an Engineer‑ in‑ Training (EIT) with APEGA and eligible and willing to obtain registration within one year of hire.

  • 4+ years of relevant engineering experience, primarily focused in project management, including responsibility for scope, schedule, budget, and coordination of multidisciplinary teams

  • Registration as a Project Management Professional (PMP) is considered an asset.

  • Experience with alternative project delivery methods (e.g., design‑ build, P3, progressive design‑ build) is considered an asset.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with strong written and verbal communication abilities to effectively engage with clients, project teams, regulators, and other stakeholders.

This role is primarily based in a typical office environment involving computer‑ based work for extended periods. Field work may be required and can include exposure to outdoor conditions and inclement weather.

This position description is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of all duties and responsibilities. Other duties, responsibilities, and activities may be assigned or modified as business needs evolve.
