ENWIN Utilities Ltd., is currently accepting applications for the vacant position of: Hydro Distribution Engineer
Location: Windsor, ON (Hybrid)
Reporting to the Manager, Hydro Engineering, the successful candidate will be a member of the team of engineers responsible for planning, designing, and maintaining a reliable hydro distribution system. This role ensures both short and long-term capacity and reliability objectives are met.
The successful applicant will be primarily responsible for Design & Standards, but may also be responsible for System Planning, Asset Management, Engineering Support and Subject Matter Expertise, if the need arises.
Design includes designing, planning, and coordinating overhead and underground distribution systems, including plant additions and new service connections, and making time-sensitive decisions during construction to address customer requests, field obstacles, and construction challenges while ensuring compliance with safety, financial, and regulatory requirements.
Standards includes preparing technical specifications for inclusion in contract tender documents, ensuring compliance with industry standards by investigating materials and construction issues, performing technical calculations, collaborating with vendors and the Hydro Operations department, developing, maintaining, and updating standard drawings, technical specifications, and procedures to support efficient workflows, and ensuring alignment with regulatory and operational requirements for approval by the Manager, Lead Engineer, or Director.
System Planning includes system modeling and simulations such as load flow, voltage drop analysis, protection and control coordination, automation, integration of generation connections, and overseeing station operations and maintenance while identifying and recommending necessary upgrades to enhance system performance.
Asset Management includes gathering data from the Operations Department, inspection reports, and software systems to perform analysis and calculations for technical and budgetary reporting, determining short- and long-term expenditure requirements for sustainment and enhancement projects, submitting these projections annually for inclusion in the Capital Budget, monitoring and enhancing processes for recording asset health information using health index scoring systems ensuring accurate data collection by field crews, and tracking the progress of annual sustainment programs and providing detailed reports summarizing yearly activities.
The Hydro Distribution Engineer is also responsible for providing Engineering Support and Subject Matter Expertise to the Operations department (overhead and underground), Hydro Engineering Technologists, and other company employees. This includes performing manual calculations as well as using engineering software, ensuring all calculations are accurate and function as intended in the field. The Hydro Distribution Engineer is responsible for evaluating, recommending, purchasing, and implementing new engineering software and tools that align with industry design standards and promote efficiencies within the Hydro Engineering and infrastructure departments.
The successful applicant must have the following skills and competencies:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with Professional Engineering designation or working toward obtaining P. Eng.
- Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in Power Systems, Electrical Machines or Protection and Controls is considered an asset.
- Minimum of three (3) years of similar or related experience.
- Experience with overhead and underground distribution systems, including load analysis, protection coordination and reliability improvements is considered an asset.
- Familiarity with Ontario Energy Board (OEB) regulations, ESA (Electrical Safety Authority) standards, CSA standards, and Hydro One connection requirements is considered an asset.
- Proficiency in load flow studies, short-circuit analysis, voltage regulation and Arc Flash analysis is considered an asset.
- Experience with utility GIS platforms (e.g., ESRI ArcGIS) and CAD software (AutoCAD) for system design and mapping is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of relays, reclosers, SCADA, and distribution automation technologies is considered an asset.
- Understanding of renewable energy integration, net metering and battery storage impacts on the grid is considered an asset.
- Ability to review engineering drawings, provide technical support to field crews, and perform site inspections.
- Knowledge of asset lifecycle management, condition assessments, and outage analysis to improve system reliability is considered an asset.
- Proficient in computer systems and software implementation experience working with a variety of computer systems including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and ERP systems.
- Ability to prepare and deliver verbal and written reports.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work both independently and as a member or leader of a team.
- Valid Class ‘G’ driver’s license.
Salary Range for Qualified Candidates: $98,876 - $123,595.00
