Your opportunity:

The Department of Immunology is an innovative and dynamic basic science department dedicated to excellence in research and teaching. We operate as an integrated, collaborative community with approximately 85 investigators in 10 research sites in Toronto, which includes our hospital-based university-affiliated research institutes. Together we strive to advance biomedical discoveries in Immunology, increase our understanding of fundamental Immunological principles and develop new applications for immune-based therapies.

As a Lab Technician, you will support research activities by coordinating laboratory operations, conducting and validating routine and proof‑of‑concept experiments, and maintaining a safe, well‑functioning lab environment. This role involves preparing and analyzing experimental data, managing laboratory equipment and resources, and ensuring compliance with safety, animal care, and regulatory standards. Serving as a key technical resource, you will provide hands‑on instruction and guidance to students and staff, assist with lab setup and protocols, and oversees day‑to‑day laboratory maintenance. Success in this role requires strong organizational skills, technical competence, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a dynamic academic research setting.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Planning, setting up, and supporting laboratory activities for teaching and research, including proof‑of‑concept experiments, equipment scheduling, and resource coordination
  • Maintaining laboratory operations by managing inventories, ordering supplies, preparing materials, cleaning and sterilizing equipment, arranging repairs, and troubleshooting routine equipment issues
  • Collecting, verifying, and summarizing experimental data, while preparing draft statistical reports and documentation as required
  • Ensuring compliance with safety, animal care, and regulatory standards, including maintaining guidelines, tracking renewals, and promoting proper occupational safety practices
  • Providing technical support and instruction to students and staff, collaborating with instructors on lab setup needs, and overseeing work‑study or student laboratory assistants

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience
  • Minimum two years experience constructing proof-of-concept experiments to test different elements of the process
  • Demonstrated experience with standard immunological, biochemical, and molecular biology techniques (e.g., PCR, RT-qPCR, flow cytometry, ELISA)
  • Experience with mouse work (e.g., husbandry, colony management, injections, tissue collection)
  • Experience with sterile technique, cell culture, operation of biosafety cabinets, and working with risk group 2 organisms
  • Experience maintaining laboratory inventories, equipment logs, service records, and supporting purchasing/vendor coordination
  • Familiarity with lab health and safety regulations, including biological waste disposal
  • Ability to orient students and staff to laboratory procedures and safe work practices
  • Ability to maintain accurate laboratory records, organize experimental data, and use electronic notebooks or shared databased effectively
  • Proficiency with computing and data management tools (e.g., Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, or equivalent systems)
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement and initiative in resolving day-to-day technical or research problems
  • Excellent time management, organizational, and communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team research setting
  • Excellent manual dexterity required
