The Alcohol, Gaming, Fuel and Tobacco Division of Service Nova Scotia is the regulatory body charged with administering Part II of the Gaming Control Act, parts of the Liquor Control Act, and the Theatres and Amusements Act. We are responsible for regulating a wide range of businesses including liquor licensees; casino operators; the Atlantic Lottery Corporation; charitable gaming providers (e.g., ticket lotteries and Bingo); video lottery gaming providers; and tobacco and vaping vendors.

About Our Opportunity

Are you interested in the world of alcohol, gambling, tobacco and vaping products? Alcohol, Gaming, Fuel & Tobacco is looking for a Junior Policy Analyst (Intern) to assist in advancing its regulatory modernization agenda.


As a Junior Policy Analyst, you’ll gain hands on experience in government policy development and implementation. You’ll contribute to projects that shape how Nova Scotian’s experience alcohol, gaming, tobacco and vaping products.

This two-year internship position offers challenging and satisfying growth opportunities while working within a high-performing team. You will be supported and trained through your development.

Primary Accountabilities

As part of the Department of Service Nova Scotia, you will work under the direction of the Manager of Policy for Alcohol, Gaming, Fuel & Tobacco and work closely with other members of the Alcohol, Gaming, Fuel & Tobacco team.

As a Junior Policy Analyst, you will support decision-making in the Division by providing research and strategic advice to support policy, legislative and regulatory objectives. Specifically, you will:

  • Conduct research and analysis to support AGFT initiatives.
  • Participate in policy and regulatory projects.
  • Prepare reports, jurisdictional scans, briefing notes and to communicate information.
  • Assist in preparing submissions to Executive Council
  • Assist with drafting correspondence to the public and stakeholders.

Qualifications and Experience

To be considered for this internship position, you must be a recent graduate from a college diploma or a university bachelor’s degree in a related field within the last 3 years.

We are looking for an individual that can demonstrate:

  • Ability to conduct policy research, analyze data, and compare options.
  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative research approaches.
  • Ability to write clearly for different audiences and clearly communicate.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook) as well as MS Teams and Microsoft 365.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, stay organized, and support project coordination.

Pay Grade: PR 06

Salary Range: $2,200.68 - $2,288.52 Bi-Weekly
