Smartrend Manufacturing Group (SMG) Inc. is one of Manitoba's fastest-growing companies, committed to increasing safety in the school bus industry and reducing emissions in the electric vehicle charging sector through our diverse divisions. We design and develop exciting, patented, and innovative technologies that make a real and lasting impact across multiple industries.

At the heart of our success are the values that guide everything we do:

  • People – our team is what makes us special
  • Passion – from our hearts and minds, demonstrated through our actions

We provide a supportive environment where hard work, passions, and goals are recognized. Innovation and collaboration are at the heart of what we do. Share your drive and aspirations with us, and we'll ensure that your efforts open doors to new opportunities and growth.

THE POSITION

The Junior Mechanical Engineer will contribute to the design, development and testing of innovative mechanical products from concept through production. The role will support the design of new products, improvements to products currently in production and the creation and maintenance of engineering and technical documentation. Working as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team, the successful candidate will prepare detailed designs and drawings, support controlled engineering releases and participate in hands-on prototype and product testing. This role is well suited to an early-career engineer who enjoys practical problem-solving, learning from experienced team members and turning ideas into reliable, manufacturable products.

HOW YOU WILL BE MAKING AN IMPACT

  • Lead design of complex, multidisciplinary devices.
  • Define technical requirements for new products.
  • Design innovative components and mechanisms utilizing knowledge and experience with plastics, metals, optics, and electromechanical systems.
  • Create detailed mechanical assemblies and drawings using SolidWorks.
  • Develop verification plans and support testing in the onsite prototyping lab.
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain and Quality teams to resolve engineering issues and support procurement.
  • Oversee product transfer to manufacturing and support field implementation.
  • Conduct design and technical reviews throughout development.
  • Support current products by investigating design, manufacturing, service and field-related issues and assisting with the development of practical product improvements.
  • Create and maintain engineering and technical documentation including drawings, specifications, test records and design-release documentation.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

  • Contribute to the mechanical design and development of new products, components and assemblies from concept through production.
  • Create and revise 3D models, detailed drawings and bills of materials using SolidWorks or similar CAD software.
  • Prepare engineering documentation and support the controlled drawing, revision and design release process.
  • Build and evaluate prototypes and participate in hands-on product testing in the onsite R&D lab.
  • Document test methods, results, design issues and recommended improvements.
  • Apply design for manufacturability principles and work with manufacturing teams to support efficient production and assembly.
  • Participate in design reviews, technical discussions and root-cause investigations.
  • Support product handoff to manufacturing and field implementation across Canada and the USA.
  • Maintain accurate engineering drawings, specifications and related product records.
  • Complete other engineering-related activities as required.
  • Current product issues and improvement opportunities are investigated thoroughly and supported by practical recommendations.
  • Engineering and technical documentation is accurate, complete and maintained in accordance with established processes.

WHAT SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE YOU REQUIRE

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • 3+ years of relevant mechanical design, product development or related engineering experience.
  • Registered or eligible for registration as an Engineer-in-Training with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba.
  • Experience creating 3D models and production-ready drawings using SolidWorks or similar CAD software.
  • Experience with drafting standards, drawing revisions and an engineering design release or change-control process.
  • Hands-on experience building prototypes, setting up tests, using measurement tools or troubleshooting mechanical systems is a strong asset.
  • Practical knowledge of automotive repair, vehicle maintenance or vehicle systems is a strong asset.
  • Interest or practical experience in 3D printing, mechatronics, electronics integration or rapid prototyping is a strong asset.
  • Experience working in a start-up, scale-up or similarly fast-changing environment is an asset.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication and teamwork skills with the ability to manage assigned work and seek guidance when needed.
  • Ability to travel within Canada, the USA and internationally as required.
