Job description

As our Junior Mechanical Engineer, you'll build your engineering career by working hands-on with mechanical products from design and prototyping through testing and production.

You'll support mechanical design assignments, create and refine designs, build and evaluate prototypes, and participate in testing activities in our onsite engineering lab. Working alongside experienced engineers and cross-functional teams, you'll develop your technical skills while contributing to real products and engineering projects.

You'll have the opportunity to learn from experienced team members, take on greater responsibility as your capabilities grow, and see your work move from an idea on screen to a product in production.

WHY THIS ROLE, WHY NOW

At Smartrend Manufacturing Group (SMG), we design, engineer, and manufacture technology that solves real-world transportation challenges, and we're growing fast.

Over the past five years, that growth has enabled significant investment in our people, our capabilities, and our automotive systems business. These investments include a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, which we will move into in May 2027, along with enhanced R&D equipment, tooling, technology, and infrastructure that strengthen our engineering capabilities and accelerate product innovation.

We're building more here – more capability, more technology, and more opportunity. And we're looking for people who want to work in a collaborative and fun environment to fuel our next wave of innovation.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Support mechanical design assignments for products, components, and assemblies under the guidance of experienced engineers.
  • Create and revise 3D models, assemblies, production drawings, and engineering documentation using SolidWorks or similar CAD software.
  • Apply product requirements, GD&T, and design-for-manufacturing principles with technical guidance.
  • Build and evaluate prototypes and support verification and validation testing.
  • Assist with onsite and longer-term testing activities, documenting results and communicating findings.
  • Support troubleshooting and root-cause investigations by gathering information, evaluating results, and contributing potential solutions.
  • Work with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain to support design changes and product transition into manufacturing.
  • Participate in design reviews and incorporate technical feedback into your work.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • A hands-on approach to mechanical design and a natural curiosity for understanding how things work and how they can be improved.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with an eagerness to investigate technical challenges and learn from experienced team members.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy in designs, drawings, documentation, and testing.
  • An interest in building and evaluating prototypes and gaining hands-on experience with mechanical testing and validation.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across engineering and manufacturing teams.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 2-3 years of relevant experience in mechanical design, product development, or a related engineering environment. Co-op and internship experience is an asset.
  • Experience with SolidWorks or comparable CAD software, including 3D modelling, assemblies, and production drawings.
  • Foundational knowledge of engineering drawings, GD&T, and design-for-manufacturing principles
