Job description

Your Opportunity:

The Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) is accountable for supporting and enhancing clinical competence within the Operating Room by aligning educational activities with evidence-based practice, organizational standards, and operational priorities. This role actively identifies gaps in perioperative nursing performance and leads purposeful educational and coaching interventions to address those gaps, ensuring staff are supported to achieve and maintain a competent working level. Education delivery extends beyond initial instruction and includes deliberate follow up, evaluation of learning transfer, and objective documentation of outcomes. The CNE collaborates closely with perioperative nursing staff to develop individualized and team-based learning plans and works in partnership with Unit Managers and program leadership to communicate progress, escalate concerns, and align educational priorities with service demands. A strong working knowledge of perioperative clinical equipment, instrumentation, technology, and surgical supplies is essential to support accurate, safe, and practical instruction. The CNE ensures staff develop proficiency and confidence with the tools and systems required for high quality surgical patient care across a range of procedures and clinical contexts. As part of the Mazankowski educator team, the CNE contributes to a collaborative, consistent, and system focused approach to education across programs. While this position is based in the Mazankowski Operating Room, there is an expectation of collaboration and cross coverage within Cardiac Sciences as required, reinforcing shared standards, continuity of practice, and collective accountability for clinical excellence. Clinical shifts including circulating and scrubbing is an expectation of the role to maintain competency.

Description:

As an Instructor, you will be an expert practitioner and key educator. You will take a leadership role in the planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of education for nursing staff including orientation, compulsory and continuing education, and clinical development. You will collaborate with management and internal partners to promote standards of clinical, educational and evidence informed practice. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications:

The successful candidate will hold a bachelor’s degree in nursing and be currently registered and in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). A minimum of two years of recent perioperative nursing experience in the Operating Room is required, along with strong knowledge of perioperative standards, surgical workflows, patient safety practices, and OR specific equipment and technology. Experience in clinical education, staff coaching, or competency development within a surgical environment is required. The candidate will demonstrate a working knowledge of adult learning principles and the ability to design and deliver effective education that supports diverse learners and translates into safe clinical practice. Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office and digital learning tools is essential. Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills are required, with the ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary perioperative team and manage priorities in a complex, fast paced environment. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Five years cardiac OR nursing experience (both adult and pediatric) preferred. Previous nursing educator or other leadership experience preferred.
