About The School Of Trades & Skills

The School of Trades & Skills is dedicated to creating the next generation of skilled trades workers. Working closely with industry, the School provides learners with education in a variety of trades and apprenticeships using the newest equipment. The School is also home to the Olds College Brewery. Fields of study offered within the School of Trades & Skills include : Brewmaster and Brewery Operations, Hospitality and Tourism, Trades, Apprenticeships & Pre‑Employment, Transitional Employment Program, and Farrier Science.

The Opportunity : Contract Instructor, Agriculture & Heavy Equipment

The instructor in the Agriculture & Heavy Equipment Program on the Olds College campus is responsible for developing curriculum, instruction, and academic support to students pursuing careers in the agriculture and heavy equipment industry. The instructor will foster a positive learning environment, mentor students, and collaborate with industry professionals to enhance program effectiveness.

The School of Trades and Skills at Olds College invites applications for Instructor for TEC 2126 Hydraulic Shift Transmissions (135 hours) from January to March, 2026. In this course, students will study the theory, operation and service procedures of hydraulic / power shift transmissions, automatic transmissions, torque converters and hydraulic retarders used in off road equipment. The students will disassemble, inspect and reassemble a power shift or automatic transmission. The students will also study system schematic interpretation using technical manuals and testing and troubleshooting procedures. There is also the possibility of instruction of other courses past March.

Key Job Functions

  • Plan and prepare for instruction in alignment with overall program objectives
  • Delivery of instruction, addressing various learning styles and needs relative to course content
  • Evaluate and report on student progress
  • Work with other College departments to facilitate and support learner success (for example, accommodations)
  • Create a learning environment that encourages student engagement and success
  • Be accessible to students outside the classroom, providing ample periods of time for counseling and mentoring students in matters related to academic success
  • Monitor classroom supplies and tools inventory

Perform various tasks to support student success :

  • First point of contact for student concerns
  • Monitor student performance and behaviour
  • Submit appropriate reports and forms as required
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of student information
  • Learn and implement technology and teaching tools to enhance the educational experience when appropriate
  • Perform other activities related to instructional assignment such as coordinating activities within a program or programs, and participating in College development initiatives
  • Collaborate with colleagues to scaffold skills within courses and programs to create an exceptional student experience
  • Qualifications, Skills And Knowledge Required

  • Minimum Agricultural Equipment Technician Journeyperson and / or Heavy Equipment Technician Journeyperson Certification.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in AET or HET with strong knowledge of farm machinery and related industry experience.
  • Knowledge, skills, and / or training in instruction / teaching setting an asset
  • Demonstrate a strong dedication to promoting inclusivity and diversity by actively seeking out and valuing diverse perspectives, fostering a welcoming and supportive environment for individuals of all backgrounds, and continuously striving to create a culture of respect and understanding
  • Ability to meet deadlines, work independently and collaboratively with a team, resolve problems and make decisions in accordance with College policies and procedures
  • Knowledge and skills in current technology applications relevant to the program and subject matter content.
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and oral)
  • Actively promote and reinforce practices that prioritize the well‑being and security of all individuals at Olds College, show a proactive attitude towards safety measures, continuously striving to enhance safety protocols and procedures to ensure the highest standards of protection, collaborate with colleagues to instill a culture of shared responsibility and accountability when it comes to maintaining a safe and secure work setting
