Clinical Legal Counsel (Forensic) Full-time, permanent

The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is Canada’s leading addiction and mental health teaching hospital. As CAMH’s Clinical Legal Counsel (Forensic), you will provide legal support to CAMH’s forensic services and, in doing so, support CAMH’s role as a leader in healthcare.

Reporting to the Director, Legal Services (Clinical), you will be responsible for providing legal advice and litigation services to clinical teams and administrators in CAMH’s Forensic Service. You will represent CAMH and its clinicians in hearings before the Ontario Review Board and resulting appeals to the Ontario Court of Appeal. You will be responsible for hearing-related consultations and preparation, and provide legal support to CAMH’s Office of the Person in Charge. In addition, you will liaise with local police, court and tribunal staff, and corrections personnel. As a member of CAMH Legal Services, you will also be involved in the development of CAMH internal policy, and the delivery of legal and forensic education and training to clinical teams. You will be called upon by CAMH’s Chief Legal Officer and the Director, Legal Services (Clinical) on legal matters, and represent CAMH’s interests with relevant community partners and stakeholders.

As a member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario, your 4-6 years of legal work experience should be mainly in litigation, with specific experience in the forensic legal system. Familiarity with laws related to the criminal justice system, public hospitals and mental health facilities is essential.

Your communication skills must be excellent (oral and written) and you must have strong interpersonal, negotiation and presentation skills. Excellent judgment, tact and diplomacy are essential to this role.

For a dynamic legal career at a leading health care institution, please apply in writing, outlining your interest and qualifications.

Please Note : This full-time, permanent position is NOT part of any bargaining unit.

Salary Range : Competitive salary and benefits package.
