Job Title: Quality Control Inspector

Job Description

The Quality Control Inspector ensures that machined, fabricated, sub-assembled, and assembled parts meet all engineering, quality, and procedural requirements in a heavy industrial manufacturing environment. This role performs detailed inspections at various stages of production, maintains and calibrates inspection tools, supports continuous improvement of quality standards, and collaborates closely with engineering and production teams to resolve nonconformances. The position is hands-on, safety-focused, and offers strong opportunities for skill growth within the shop environment.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect machined, fabricated, sub-assembled, and fully assembled parts in multiple categories, including purchased components and manufactured items.
  • Perform receiving inspection of raw materials and purchased components to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Inspect sub-contracted services such as machining, heat-treating, plating, non-destructive testing (NDT), and related processes.
  • Conduct first article inspections, in-process inspections, and final inspections on manufactured parts.
  • Perform, control, and record calibration of inspection tools and instruments, including shop inspection tools and shop control fixtures, in accordance with applicable quality procedures and ISO requirements.
  • Review and interpret engineering drawings, diagrams, and formulas to perform inspections in accordance with drawings and any additional procedural requirements.
  • Provide written and verbal suggestions, including through Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), to modify existing quality or production standards to achieve optimal quality within the capabilities of materials and equipment.
  • Review and analyze job tasks and inspection tool inventory to improve inspection and quality assurance efficiency, performance, and reliability.
  • Use hand trucks, forklifts, overhead hoists, and lifting devices to safely move, position, and lift parts weighing up to approximately 6,000 pounds into and out of the inspection area.
  • Perform and document dimensional inspections and coordinate tests for paint quality according to applicable procedures and standards.
  • Coordinate with the Engineering department to resolve deficiencies, discrepancies, or nonconformances and support final disposition decisions.
  • Perform inspections using a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM), Gear Measuring Machine (GMM), portable CMM, hardness testing equipment, and NDT methods, as required.
  • Review Certificates of Conformance and material certificates against company requirements and initiate corrective actions with the appropriate commodity contacts when deficiencies are identified.
  • File and route all required documents for records and information in accordance with applicable procedures and requirements.
  • Execute enterprise system transactions to support the electronic inspection queue and discrepant material reports (DMRs).
  • Execute part dispositions in support of Engineering Change Orders (ECOs).
  • Become familiar with and adhere to relevant Quality Management System (QMS) procedures and requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with other Quality Control Inspectors, leads, supervisors, machinists, and assembly personnel to support production goals.
  • Maintain a strong focus on safety, housekeeping, and cleanliness in the inspection area and throughout the shop.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned to support the quality and production objectives of the operation.

Essential Skills

  • At least 2 years of experience performing inspection of parts in a heavy industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Hands-on experience using inspection tools such as calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and hardness testers.
  • Familiarity with Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) and their applications in dimensional inspection, with the ability to learn and further develop CMM operation skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, including dimensions, tolerances, and geometric specifications.
  • Experience working in a quality control or quality inspection function within a heavy industrial setting.
  • Ability to operate or work around forklifts, overhead hoists, and other material handling equipment to move heavy parts safely.
  • Strong organizational skills to ensure the correct product and documentation are available for inspection.
  • Demonstrated safety focus in day-to-day activities.
  • Reliable punctuality and consistent attendance, supported by references.
  • Flexibility to assist other teams and adapt to changing priorities in the shop.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Overhead crane and forklift experience.
  • Machining experience or exposure to machine shop operations.
  • Basic computer skills to execute enterprise system transactions and manage electronic inspection queues and reports.
  • Experience with portable CMM or Faro arm (or similar articulated arm measurement systems).
  • Experience with Gear Measuring Machines (GMM), hardness testing, and NDT methods is an asset.
  • Strong communication skills to provide clear written and verbal feedback on quality issues and improvement ideas.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented, respectful, and supportive environment.
