Job description

Job Description:

Duties & Responsibilities:
Curriculum

  • Collaborates and co-ordinates with department faculty and deans in the planning, development, approval process and implementation of new curriculum; ensures consultation with advisory committees, deans, other division chairs, and affected areas of the college
  • Provides support to and actively participates and facilitates departments in reviewing, updating, and preparing curricula proposals.
  • Presents department curriculum changes to DDC and Education Council.
  • Participates in program and curriculum review

College Wide Responsibilities

  • Supports the Dean in the creation and implementation of strategic and operational plans for and with departments.
  • Assists and provides input into the development and implementation of the College’s Strategic and Academic plans.
  • Represents the Division to other academic departments, divisions, and support areas of the College.
  • Represents the College, Division, Department, or faculty on external committees, meetings, projects, organizations or public functions, as appropriate.
  • Participates in College promotional events or meetings (for example: alumni events, open houses) on and off campus.
  • Participates in the development, revision and implementation of College policies, guidelines and procedures; advises and assists department chairs, assistant chairs, coordinators and other faculty in the practice of their appropriate and timely application.
  • Communicates, coordinates and shares information, decisions, concerns and responsibilities with other division chairs and department chairs within the division; and participates and contributes to committees, such as:
    • Langara Council
    • Deans & Division Chairs Committee
    • Education Council
    • Graduation Adjudication Committee
  • Participates in and contributes to special committees and projects that reflect the needs of the College, including strategic, academic, and integrated planning, facilities usage and budgeting, programming.
  • In collaboration with deans and departments, identifies, initiates and develops activities and events that meet the needs of the College, departments and/or students.
  • Identifies opportunities and makes recommendations for improvement in college business processes; provides feedback as required.


Division Responsibilities

  • Responsible for communicating and consulting with the division regarding special projects, funding opportunities, policy revisions, college initiatives and projects.
  • Holds division meetings
  • Advises the Dean on any emerging issues.
  • Encourages strategic and academic innovation and cooperation within and between departments.
  • Advocates for departments and faculty members as appropriate.
  • Approves course schedules, instructional workload assignments, vacation, and non-instructional duty schedules for faculty in such a way that student, department, and college needs are met.
  • Reviews non-instructional duty (NID) plans and approves NID reports for faculty.
  • Ensures that program advisory committees operate in accordance with College policy.
  • Monitors enrolments during registration, and works with the Dean and department chairs to adjust course offerings as needed.
  • Addresses student complaints, grade appeals, student, and faculty issues as per College policies.
  • Serves on appeal committees that arise from college policy
  • Maintains faculty office inventory and works with Department Chairs in assigning offices.

Finance

  • Works with the Dean to oversee budgeting, resource allocation, and financial management of departments. Ensures department expenditures and revenues are consistent with College policy and priorities.
  • In conjunction with the Deans and Department Chairs, plans, recommends and determines priorities for capital expenditures.
  • Tracks and approves professional development fund expenses forwarded by Department Chairs.
  • Working with the Deans, plans, recommends and monitors annual department section plans in consultation with department chairs, assistant chairs and coordinators, and ensures that faculty appointments reflect section plans.
  • Approves departmental expenses, reimbursements, time sheets, as required

Human Resources

  • Supports department recruiting plans and participates in department selection recommendation committees, and faculty evaluation committees, as per the Collective Agreement.
  • Ensures that procedures for selection committees consistent with the Collective Agreement are in place, monitors the operation of selection committees, and expedites accurate completion and submission of Faculty Appointment Recommendation Forms.
  • Recommends hiring decisions; calculates and recommends initial step placement of new faculty to the Dean.
  • Ensures that evaluation procedures consistent with the Collective Agreement and “Guidelines for Evaluations” are implemented; monitors evaluation procedures.
  • Supports Department Chairs in monitoring the faculty evaluation process and recommends any remedial action plans to the Dean.
  • Initiates selection of Department Chairs, Assistant Chairs, and Coordinators and forwards appointment recommendations to the Dean.
  • Facilitates orientation, mentoring and training of the Division Chair successor.
  • Supports and provides orientation and ongoing development for department chairs and coordinators within the division.
  • Where appropriate, facilitates the informal resolution of conflicts and disputes between employees, and participates in the formal resolution process.
  • Approves and recommends faculty and staff leave requests in accordance with policy and Collective Agreements.
  • Acts for other Division Chairs in their absence.
  • In consultation with Human Resources may advise and support the Department Chair on appropriate supports and college resources to address the personal concerns of faculty and staff pertaining to or affecting assigned duties.
  • Along with the Academic Administrative Manager, participates in the hiring, evaluation, and day-to-day supervision of the Division Assistant.
  • Serves as the Division Chairs’ Office Manager on a semester rotational basis.

Qualifications Required:

  • As per Article 10.7 in the Collective Agreement, a Division Chair must be a full-time regular faculty member.
