Job description

About Us:

Established in 2002, General Fusion is a global leader in the race to commercialize clean fusion energy. We are pursuing a uniquely practical approach, Magnetized Target Fusion, and aim to provide zero-carbon fusion power to the grid in the early to mid-2030s. Today at our state-of-the-art labs in Richmond, BC, we’re operating a groundbreaking fusion demonstration machine called Lawson Machine 26 (LM26), designed to achieve transformational technical milestones and accelerate General Fusion’s technology to commercialization. Our path to market is funded by a global syndicate of leading energy venture capital firms, industry leaders, and technology pioneers. Learn more at www.generalfusion.com.

Position Overview:

Reporting to the Manager, Lab Operations, the Applied Physicist will be a key member of the team responsible for operating General Fusion’s LM26 machine. The role requires a sustained focus on high-impact priorities and an open, adaptable mindset. We are seeking an individual who enjoys hands-on work, communicates effectively, and engages in creative problem solving, both independently and in collaboration with others.

Responsibilities:

  • Operate LM26 during experimental test campaigns
  • Actively participate in machine troubleshooting, maintenance and upgrades
  • Validate data integrity from experiments as they are being executed
  • Collaborate with physicists and data analysts to understand test results and ensure test campaigns are achieving their goals
  • Collaborate with electrical and mechanical engineers on equipment repairs and upgrades
  • Document and communicate results
  • Operate and perform regular maintenance on LM26 safety systems; maintain personal and co-worker safety as a top priority in all operations
  • Other tasks as assigned

Requirements:

  • B.Sc. in Engineering Physics, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent
  • 5 - 7 years of experience in a hands-on role operating complex lab equipment, or equivalent
  • Firm grasp of physics fundamentals and rooted understanding of the experimental method
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams in a fast-paced research and development environment with rapidly evolving priorities
  • Understanding of the foundations of plasma physics and ability to work closely with physicists on the interpretation of experimental results

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with high voltage, high energy systems
  • Experience with diagnostic systems beneficial; familiarity with high frame-rate videography
  • Experience with Python, MATLAB or other programming languages
  • Experience with control systems (LabVIEW, PLC) and DAQ equipment
  • Experience in fusion, pulsed magnetic compression, z-pinch or railgun applications

This position may require flexible scheduling, including evening and weekend shifts, to support LM26 experimental operations and project needs.

The typical hiring range for this full-time position is $112,500- $137,500. General Fusion considers many factors when determining total compensation, including job-specific or highly specialized knowledge, skills and experience, proficiency, job location, and internal equity.

What We Offer:

  • Comprehensive benefits package
  • RRSP Contribution – No Employee Match Needed!
  • Support for professional development
  • Great company culture – social events, food trucks, bike rides, Sun Run, etc.
