The Project Design Engineer is responsible for the design and execution of various
projects, ranging in size and complexity, with a focus on high voltage distribution lines and substations for utilities and commercial / industrial operations.
They are responsible using calculations and skilled analysis in the quality and design of
outputs.
Responsibilities
- Perform power system studies including coordination studies, short circuit analysis, arc-flash, load flows, harmonic analysis, power factor correction, voltage transient and ground grid design studies using engineering software
- Conduct field inspections and testing of electrical equipment including but not limited to disconnects, circuit breakers, fuses, transformers, cables, protection relays, CTs / PTs, etc.
- Generate design estimates and quotations, develop proposals, provide customer solutions and deliver customer solutions
- Manage projects, develop and maintain job / project documentation including drawings, specifications, quotations, change orders, submittals, comments, review, approvals, test sheets, reports as well as any other relevant documentation
- Create grounding design studies by implementation of SES Autogrid software
- Determine protection and control schemes, design and retrofit
- Perform troubleshoot and problem analysis
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering
- P. Eng designation is a must
- Valid G driver’s license
- Five (5) to ten (10) years of directly related experience in designing electrical power systems
- Engineering experience designing / working on electrical / civil distribution systems
- Prior Utility distribution design experience
- Field experience is an asset
- Prior field experience identifying / locating structures, equipment, distribution utility / client plant and taking measurements
- Knowledge of relevant industry design / construction standards, codes, regulations, requirements and practices
- Experience working in a technical environment
- Knowledge of customer and industry design standards
- Computer skills including proficiency using MS office and a working knowledge of AutoCAD and / or MicroStation
- Ability to generate and interpret electrical documents, including EWD’s, CWD’s, single line drawings, and technical reports
