Job description

Experience Aviva

Individually we are people, but together we are Aviva. Individually these are just words, but together they are our Values – Care, Commitment, Community, and Confidence.

At Aviva Canada, we put people first, our employees, our customers, and our communities. We’re proud of a culture built on care, inclusion, and collaboration, where your voice matters and your growth is supported. We’re not just about insurance; we’re about making a real difference by protecting what matters most.

The Opportunity

Join a collaborative team of data scientists who use data to drive decisions across Aviva. You’ll work on high-impact projects from predicting customer lifetime value and improving customer journeys to applying machine learning to automate and predict claim outcomes. Your work will reach millions of customers.

As a Data Scientist, you will be part of ourData Innovation team, partnering with business stakeholders and influencing future products and solutions. You’ll contribute across the full software development lifecycle; from ideation and model development to deployment, production support, and monitoring. With mentorship and a supportive team, you’ll build practical models already used in production and help expand their impact.

What you’ll do :

Transform sophisticated data sets into meaningful conclusions & recommendations.

Develop innovative solutions for pattern recognition using machine learning and statistical approaches.

Maintenance of a growing set of data mining tools, frameworks & approaches.

Communicate model results and findings effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Support innovation and continuous improvement in our data science practices.

What you’ll bring :

An educational background in computer science or engineering, math, statistics, physics or a related field. A minimum of an MSc is required.

3+ years of experience building models and working with large datasets (industry or academic setting).

Proficiency in Python and best practices in software engineering (modularity, code reuse, documentation).

Strong analytical skills and a keen interest in insurance pricing.

Clear, concise communication and the ability to explain complex topics to diverse stakeholders.

A collaborative mindset and eagerness to learn and contribute to a high-performing team.

What makes you stand out :

A learning mindset and structured approach to problem solving.

A portfolio that shows how you derive insights from data (e.g., participation within the broader data science community, open-source personal projects, Kaggle competitions).

Ability to flex across roles when needed to move projects forward (e.g., project management, development, modeling, chief communicator of solutions).

Exceptional communication skills with the ability to clearly explain complex algorithms to non-technical audiences. You understand that success isn’t just about building a great model; it’s about creating alignment and gaining buy-in from diverse stakeholders.

Creativity, ownership, and the ability to lead projects independently.

What you’ll get :

The salary band for this position ranges from $90,000 to $120,000. Please note that individual salary is determined by factors such as job-related knowledge, skills and experience, as well as internal equity.

Compelling rewards package including base compensation, eligibility for annual bonus, retirement savings, share plan, health benefits, personal wellness, and volunteer opportunities.

Hybrid flexible work model.

Outstanding career development opportunities.

We’ll support your professional development education.

Competitive vacation package with the option to purchase 5 extra days off per year.

Employee-driven programs focused on gender, LGBTQ+, origins, diversity, and inclusion.

Corporate wellness programs to support our employees’ physical and mental health.

This job advertisement is for an existing vacancy which has been posted both internally & externally.
