Process Support Specialist - Yeast Fermentation and Production

Main Functions

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Process Support Specialist to support yeast fermentation and production at our yeast production facilities, where various yeast products in different formats (liquid, fresh, and dry) are generated for different applications, including baking, brewing, wine making, and fuel ethanol fermentation.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in microbiology, fermentation technology or biochemical engineering, with a focus on yeast or microbial fermentation processes in an industrial setting.

This role would be expected to spend 50% of their time traveling to production facilities, primarily in NA but also globally as needed.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Track and trend yeast output, yield and quality data for each fermentation or production batch to identify and eliminate special cause variations and make recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Monitor and analyze fermentation and other production data continuously to identify trends, patterns, potential issues, and recommend preventive actions.
  • Travel from plant to plant proactively to identify problems and develop solutions to improve operations, safety, quality and efficiency.
  • Be able to travel to the plants with short notice, assist production with troubleshooting, drive root cause analysis investigations and provide timely solutions.
  • Design, coordinate and supervise scaled-down experiments for studying the critical process parameters identified in fermentation and downstream processes to increase quality, consistency, and yield and reduce costs and processing times.
  • Plan, coordinate, and provide onsite support for the scale-up of new process schemes and new yeast strains’ production, ensuring a smooth transition from lab scale to industrial scale.
  • Collaborate with R&D to evaluate and implement new techniques, new devices, new technology aiming for continuous process improvement and optimization for production plants.
  • Prepare technical, lab experiments, technology transfer, plant trials and troubleshooting reports, and techno-economic feasibility assessments for communicating work outcomes and future recommendations.

Technical skills

Required

  • B.S. in Microbiology, chemical engineering, biotechnology, biochemical engineering, or other related fields, M.S. or Ph.D. preferred.
  • Good knowledge of fermentation technology and biochemical engineering principles, theory and practice with special focus on yeast fermentation operations in an industrial setting or a strong interest in acquiring such skills.
  • Experience with process scale-up and technology transfer.
  • Proficient in data analysis and statistical process control.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly communicate results, concepts and ideas.

An asset

  • Good working knowledge of chemical and biochemical process unit operations.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of SCADA, data historian, process control and automation.
  • Familiarity with data science tools such as Python, R, or SAS.
