Job description

SMS is seeking an Autonomous Haulage Specialist to provide technical support for the deployment and operation of Autonomous Haulage Systems (AHS). Reporting to the AHS Superintendent, this role acts as a technical resource and liaison between SMS Equipment, Modular Mining Systems, Komatsu America, and the customer, supporting AHS fleet initialization, testing, and ongoing operations through strong technical insight and collaboration.

Work Location: Fort McMurray, AB
Salary: $100,000 - $120,000 Annually
Work Arrangement: Fixed on site, split field and branch responsibility.
Schedule: 14x14

What You’ll Do

1. Develops and maintains in depth technical knowledge on the AHS system, operation, and support functions.

  • Stay current on equipment changes, applications, and industry standards
  • Support troubleshooting and resolution of system issues using technical documentation and diagnostic tools
  • Document field failures and provide improvement recommendations
  • Assist in establishing technical standards and provide quality assurance across shifts

2. As a technical resource for AHS, assists the branch and customers in the assembly, commissioning and service of the equipment.

  • Provide technical advice and support to customers, branches, and OEM representatives
  • Oversee documentation of service, safety, and equipment performance issues
  • Share reliability insights, customer concerns, and improvement opportunities with internal teams and OEMs

3. As related to AHS, provides customer support and service.

  • Provide ongoing support for operational performance and technical issues
  • Assist with the resolution of complex or disputed equipment claims
  • Support deployment of AHS training and deliver technical training as required

4. Continuous AHS product improvement

  • Track and prioritize Factory Campaigns (FCs)
  • Monitor equipment updates, Flash News, and Parts & Service News (PSNs)
  • Prepare and submit Technical Service Information (TSIs)

5. AHS Parts management and processing

  • Maintain working knowledge of AHS parts and appropriate inventory levels
  • Process parts orders and research parts information using approved systems
  • Perform inventory counts in coordination with the inventory management team

6. Branch Operations

  • Participate in Branch and Customer JoiFUL meetings as required
  • Review JoiFUL logs and support follow‑up on unresolved issues
  • Provide warranty support to branches and customers, where applicable

7. Maintains positive working relationships with all manufactures, suppliers, customers and SMS personnel.

8. Performs other relevant duties as assigned by AHS Project Superintendent.

What You Bring

The successful candidate will have a relevant engineering degree, Journeyperson certification, or equivalent experience within the heavy equipment industry.

Other requirements include:

  • Sound understanding of principles associated with the mining environment
  • Ability to perform effectively in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment with a strong focus on customer and client relationships
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite with a broad working knowledge of computer systems
  • Strong communication skills when working with customers and OEM partners
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement, staying current with new technologies, and applying best practices to enhance product performance and productivity
  • Proven ability to make sound decisions under pressure, with good judgement, initiative, a positive attitude, and a high level of dependability

This position is classified as an Individual Contributor role in SMS Equipment’s competency framework, requiring demonstration of core competencies (customer focus, collaboration, and technical/functional expertise).
