Job description

We are seeking a highly accomplished Senior Data Engineer for an enterprise-level contract opportunity based in Toronto. In this role, you will take on a premier engineering capacity within data platform development, enterprise data warehousing, and business intelligence streams, specializing in designing, building, and optimizing scalable data pipelines and analytics-ready datasets.

As a principal data engineer, you will bridge the gap between complex business requirements and modern cloud data architectures. Operating within a hybrid work model, you will lead the end-to-end development of data integration packages, build robust Azure Data Factory and SSIS pipelines, optimize Azure Synapse data warehouses, and enforce strict data quality, cleansing, and governance processes. This position is tailored for an expert who can transform complex source data into actionable insights, streamline automated CI/CD deployment pipelines, and support multi-tiered analytics platforms.

Location: Toronto, ON

Assignment Type: Hybrid (Minimum 2 days per week onsite)

Contract Duration: 12-month contract

Advantages
Modern Cloud Stack: Deepen hands-on expertise across Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse, SQL Data Warehouse, and automated Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines.

End-to-End Pipeline Ownership: Design and optimize enterprise data integration packages, data lakes, data marts, and automated workflows from raw ingestion to analytics delivery.

Data Quality & Governance Scope: Drive advanced data cleansing, data stewardship, and automated quality framework implementations across large-scale enterprise datasets.

Collaborative Hybrid Work Model: Enjoy a balanced working arrangement combining onsite collaboration in Toronto with remote flexibility.

Responsibilities
Support, design, develop, and maintain enterprise data lakes, data warehouses, and data marts for business intelligence and analytics solutions.

Design, build, support, and document complex data integration packages using Azure Data Factory (ADF) and SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS).

Write, optimize, and document complex T-SQL code, stored procedures, views, triggers, and performance indexes to support high-volume data flows.

Implement robust data quality, data cleansing, and data stewardship mechanisms across enterprise ingestion pipelines.

Collaborate with project teams and business analysts to translate complex business requirements into clear technical specifications and data architectures.

Participate in dimensional data modeling, data warehouse design, and schema optimizations for cloud and on-premises storage solutions.

Conduct advanced data analysis to extract meaningful, data-driven insights and recommend process automation enhancements.

Engineer CI/CD build and deployment pipelines within Azure DevOps to streamline code promotion across environments.

Support various testing phases (Systems Integration Testing, QA, UAT) by resolving technical defects and performing unit testing.

Create detailed technical design specifications, system documentation, status reports, and conduct knowledge transfer sessions for operational teams.

Qualifications
Core Requirements & Mandatory Criteria
Education: University degree in Computer Science, or equivalent, combined with directly related professional experience in a technical discipline.

Database & Data Engineering Experience: 5+ years of progressive hands-on experience in database development or data engineering for enterprise-level solutions.

Integration Tooling Expertise: 5+ years of hands-on experience building ETL/ELT pipelines with SSIS, Microsoft Azure Data Factory (ADF), and related Azure cloud services.

Data Warehousing & Database Depth: 5+ years of hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure SQL Data Warehouse, and Microsoft SQL Server (2016 or later).

DevOps & CI/CD Pipelines: 5+ years of experience constructing and supporting automated deployment pipelines using Azure DevOps.

Data Modeling & Architecture: Expert understanding and enterprise-scale experience working with Data Warehouse (DW), Data Lake design, and Business Intelligence (BI) implementations.

Data Quality & Cleansing: Proven experience designing and implementing data quality rules, cleansing protocols, and stewardship workflows.

Preferred Assets
Data Visualization: Experience developing interactive reports and dashboards using Microsoft Power BI or similar visual analytics tools.

Estimation & Analytical Skills: Well-developed problem-solving capabilities with a proven ability to provide accurate work effort estimates.

Soft Skills & Collaboration
Communication & Interpersonal Attributes: Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills to articulate complex technical solutions clearly to cross-functional stakeholders.

Self-Motivated Execution: Strong analytical mindset with the ability to work efficiently, manage deliverables, and adapt to evolving technical requirements.
