Job Description
You will like being a Controls Engineer in a remote / hybrid role with a base location to be announced in Southampton, Portsmouth / Andover, Hampshire, England. Join a rapidly growing maritime technology company at the forefront of innovation, specializing in wind-assisted propulsion systems that reduce fuel consumption and emissions in global shipping.
Enjoy the benefits of working with a forward-thinking team dedicated to sustainability, with opportunities for global travel and team meet-ups. The Controls Engineer role offers a blank page opportunity to own the full controls lifecycle, from architecture design to on-board commissioning of cutting-edge systems. You will be encouraged to express curiosity and ambition, contributing to the growth and scalability of control systems while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
Specifically, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining control systems to optimize the performance of the wind propulsion system. Your duties include defining system architecture linking sensors, effectors, and core processors; owning and evolving control algorithms; developing and maintaining user-friendly HMIs; undertaking system commissioning onboard vessels; troubleshooting hardware and software; managing system requirements; and collaborating with mechanical, electrical, and software teams. As the company grows, you will have the opportunity to build and lead a controls engineering team.
To succeed, you should have a degree in Control Engineering, Electrical / Electronic Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline. You should have expertise in control system architecture, experience across the full controls lifecycle, networking proficiency with interfaces like IP, CAN bus, Modbus, NMEA, or Serial, and field experience diagnosing deployed systems. Automation experience in marine, industrial, or autonomous systems is desirable, along with a growth mindset and willingness to travel globally for sea trials, factory testing, and company meet-ups (expenses paid).
Desirable skills include deploying advanced control algorithms and AI (e.g., Matlab / Simulink), exposure to AI / ML techniques, knowledge of marine regulations, and HMI design skills for demanding environments.
As a Controls Engineer, you will enjoy a competitive salary between £55,000 and £75,000 per annum, with potential for more based on experience. Benefits include fully remote work initially transitioning to hybrid, monthly team meet-ups in the UK, engineering workshops, factory or ship visits, coverage of travel and accommodation, offshore allowances, opportunities for rapid progression, pension, private healthcare, and 25 days of holiday plus bank holidays.
