Specialist, Data & Business Process

The Opportunity

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is seeking a Specialist, Data & Business Process to join its talented team of professionals in the Regulatory Applications (RA) Branch. This new and exciting opportunity will help shape how Regulatory Applications uses data, strengthens and capitalizes on process improvement, advances automation, and applies emerging digital tools to move important work forward. This is not a traditional data analyst or IT role — it is a business-facing opportunity, working closely with Regulatory Applications teams to connect data, processes, systems, and regulatory work to identify opportunities and support branch-wide improvements.

You will play a key role in strengthening data stewardship, improving data quality and accessibility, and turning operational information into clear insights that support credible, risk-informed, and evidence-based regulatory decision making. This role is well suited to someone who enjoys solving practical business problems, connecting data to decision-making, and helping teams adopt better tools, workflows, and practices that create lasting value for Regulatory Applications and the broader AER.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Foster and develop data stewardship by strengthening data governance and improving data integrity, quality, and accessibility using your expertise and capacity to meet current and future business needs.

  • Turn data into meaningful insight by building and maintaining reports, dashboards, visualizations, and analytics that help Regulatory Applications understand trends, monitor performance, and make informed operational and regulatory decisions.

  • Partner with branch subject matter experts to understand business challenges, map current and future processes, and deliver practical improvements that make work more consistent, efficient, and effective.

  • Help move the branch forward by developing and supporting automation and AI-enabled solutions that reduce manual effort, strengthen data readiness and quality controls, and promote responsible use of digital tools.

  • Use your understanding of AER systems, branch processes, data sources, and reporting structures to connect how information moves through the business and identify opportunities to improve how work gets done.

  • Build strong relationships across Regulatory Applications and partner teams by translating complex data, process, and system information into clear advice that helps stakeholders adopt better practices, procedures, and tools.

What we’re looking for in you:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business intelligence, data analytics, data science or a related field.

  • 5+ years of relevant experience in business intelligence.

  • You bring strong knowledge of data governance, business intelligence, reporting, analytics, process improvement, workflow optimization, and related tools such as Excel, Access, SQL, Tableau, Power BI, Cognos, FME, Python, SharePoint, Power Automate, or similar tools.

  • You understand AER regulatory processes, systems, data sources, and how application data supports decisions, reporting, strategic priorities, and responsible AI adoption.

  • You enjoy solving complex problems across data, processes, systems, and stakeholder needs and can turn analysis into clear recommendations, reporting, and practical business insights.

  • You can work independently, manage small projects or branch processes, identify inefficiencies, document workflows, and help implement improvements that support operational priorities.

  • You are a clear communicator and relationship builder who can explain complex data, process, and system information and influence adoption of improved practices, procedures, and tools.

Additional Information:

  • All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.

  • Should an individual with the required qualifications not be available, applicants with closely related qualifications may be considered. As a result, the position may be redesigned and/or reclassified.

  • If you need accommodation during any stage of the recruitment process, please email . Information relating to the need for accommodation and accommodation measures will be addressed confidentially.

What we offer you:

  • Opportunity to make a difference and be part of a performance driven team that is responsible for the efficient, safe, orderly, and environmentally responsible development of Alberta’s energy and mineral resources.

  • The ability to leverage your expertise and critical thinking skills to contribute in wide-ranging, challenging, and complex work.

  • Robust total reward packages including; a competitive compensation program, defined benefit pension plan(s), flexible benefits, and wellness programs.

  • Flexible work options and hours, aligned with organizational policies.

More information about working at the AER’s including our comprehensive Total Rewards package can be found in the .

Our Commitment to Diversity:

At the AER, our values of Accountability, Collaboration, Transparency, and Trust & Respect are foundational to our culture – a culture where every individual, regardless of race, colour, religion, gender, national origin, age, disability, or any other legally protected factors, thrives and contributes their unique perspectives.
