Job description

MECHANICAL MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN

Industrial Equipment Technician | Position Profile

PRIMARY PURPOSE

Keep production equipment safe, reliable, food-safe, and running efficiently through troubleshooting, repairs, inspections, preventive maintenance, and continuous improvement.

MAINTENANCE PRIORITY HIERARCHY

1. Food Safety: Eliminate contamination risks, damaged food-contact parts, leaking seals, loose hardware, improper temporary repairs, and other conditions that could compromise product safety.

2. Equipment / Employee Safety: Identify and correct issues involving guards, interlocks, bearings, electrical or mechanical hazards, and other unsafe equipment conditions.

3. Equipment Reliability & Efficiency: Reduce downtime, correct recurring failures, improve equipment performance, and complete mechanical adjustments needed to maintain consistent production.

4. Preventive Maintenance: Complete scheduled inspections, lubrication, wear-part replacement, equipment-condition checks, and accurate documentation of maintenance findings.

5. Continuous Improvement / Projects: Support equipment upgrades, stronger component designs, guarding improvements, changeover improvements, fabrication, and reliability-focused projects.

EQUIPMENT ENVIRONMENT

The technician should be comfortable troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining production equipment including:

  • Mixers and blending equipment
  • Conveyors and material-handling systems
  • Ovens and baking equipment
  • Pumps and depositors
  • Packaging equipment
  • Gearboxes and motors
  • Pneumatic systems
  • Stainless-steel food-processing equipment

PREFERRED MECHANICAL & TECHNICAL SKILLS

  • Bearings, shafts, sprockets, chains, belts, and mechanical power-transmission components
  • Gearboxes and electric motors
  • Pneumatics and basic hydraulics
  • Pumps and mechanical seals
  • Conveyor systems
  • Stainless-steel food equipment
  • Welding and fabrication
  • Troubleshooting recurring mechanical failures and identifying root causes
  • Preventive maintenance procedures and equipment inspections
  • Reading equipment manuals, schematics, and mechanical drawings
  • Basic electrical troubleshooting
  • Sensors, switches, and motors
  • Lockout/tagout (LOTO)
  • Food-manufacturing sanitation, GMP, and hygienic repair requirements

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

  • Equipment is repaired correctly and returned to service safely and efficiently.
  • Recurring failures are investigated to determine root cause rather than repeatedly replacing the same part.
  • Food-safety and employee-safety risks are identified and escalated immediately.
  • Preventive maintenance work is completed consistently and documented accurately.
  • Equipment condition, required parts, and outstanding maintenance needs are clearly communicated.
  • The technician contributes ideas that improve equipment reliability, maintainability, and production efficiency.
